Today, we commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution, the peaceful uprising that ensured the triumph of democracy over dictatorship. We also honor the courage and bravery of the Filipino people and remember those whose lives were lost in the fight for our countryโ€™s freedom, especially the victims of Martial Law.

May we continue to remember our history and uphold the principles of democracy, protect our nationโ€™s freedom, and choose the right leaders who will genuinely serve for the common good of the Filipino people and our beloved nation. ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญ

March 18th, 1945 was the day Panay, Romblon and Guimaras island ended Japanese occupation, through the collective efforts of the Filipino resistance fighters and the Americans. In 1989, President Corazon Aquino, by Proclamation No. 430, proclaimed March 18th Victory Day in Panay and Romblon, in memory of the patriots who laid down their lives in this great fight for independence (Official Gazette, 1989).

This historical feat is a testament to the indomitable spirit of the Filipino and what we can do when we unite in fighting against tyranny.

As we commemorate their heroism, let us also pause to consider our obligation to promote the values for which they foughtโ€”freedom, unity, and resilience. Their memory lives on in every Filipino who works towards a better, brighter future.

On February 11, 1986, when hooded gunmen pursued Antique Governor Evelio B. Javier at the Capitol Plaza and opened fire. His life ended in tragedy, but his legacy ignited a movement.

A critic of the Marcos dictatorship, Javier fiercely opposed the fraudulent 1986 Snap Elections, where "dagdag-bawas" secured Marcos' contested victory over Corazon Aquino. On that fateful day, Javier was chased by masked gunmen across the plaza and alleyways of San Jose, Antique, and gunned down in broad daylight.

While others remained silent in fear or pretended for safety, he chose to fight. He was not scared. He was not tempted by money. Nor was he intimidated by threats. Power did not impress him. His only goal was to bring freedom back to his country. His assassination ignited the EDSA People Power Revolution on February 25, 1986, as his senseless murder stimulated national resentment, which, at large contributed to Marcos's eventual downfall.

As a testament to his sacrifice, President Corazon Aquino issued Republic Act 7601 on June 3, 1992, proclaiming February 11 as Evelio B. Javier Day-a special non-working holiday in the provinces of Aklan, Antique, Capiz, and Iloilo.
The story of Javier is one of both promise and tragedy. Let us remember a man who sacrificed for truth, justice, and freedomโ€”a legacy that continues to inspire generations. His courage lives forever!

The Art of Clay: Bandoja's Pottery Making Heritage

Antique is one of the provinces in the Philippines known for its traditional pottery-making. Tibiao is a major producer of pottery, particularly in the barangay of Bandoja, also known as "Lupaan," situated between Sta. Justa and Tigbaboy.

According to local pottery makers, the craft has been passed down from their forefathers. They create various types of pots, including flower vases, flower pots, kalans, and bricks, using traditional methods with a wheel and a piece of cloth. The primary ingredient, clay, is sourced from a specific location in Bandoja near the paddy fields.

Despite the presence of competitors, the people of Bandoja continue to practice this traditional craft. While other towns in Antique, such as Sibalom, Barbaza, and Libertad, also produce pottery, the elder makers claim that Bandoja's products are distinct due to their durability and quality.

The pottery makers face challenges, particularly during the rainy season when they cannot obtain clay. They also struggle with firing the kiln using bamboo or rice husks. However, with the support of local associations, tourism, and companies, the pottery makers have gained recognition and are now able to sell their products to various stores, earning extra income and promoting their craft.

Pottery making has become a vital source of livelihood in Bandoja, allowing some families to send their children to college and attain their own professions.
