Empowering the Next Generation: CSU-CVM Hosts Distinguished Practitioners for Board Exam Insight Program

The Cagayan State University - College of Veterinary Medicine recently held a landmark event, "Bridging the Gap: Real-World Expertise for Future Veterinarians," aimed at equipping graduating students with invaluable industry insights and strategies for the upcoming licensure exam.

The activity commenced with a warm welcome from the Campus Executive Officer Engr. Roger P. Rumpon in his office. CEO Roger emphasized the university's commitment to producing globally competitive veterinary professionals. The atmosphere was one of high anticipation as the campus welcomed a powerhouse delegation of veterinary experts and leaders.

A Gathering of Veterinary Giants: The event featured a prestigious roster of guests, headlined by Dr. Tom Acorda, a member of the Board of Examiners for the Veterinary Medicine Licensure Exam. With her wife, Dr. Jessica Acorda, their presence provided students with a rare, authoritative perspective on the standards and expectations of the national boards.
Joining him were several distinguished practitioners and consultants, each bringing a wealth of specialized knowledge.

Swine and Poultry Industry Leaders: Students gained large-scale management insights from Dr. Renato Naranjo (consultant and entrepreneur), Dr. Dominador Borja (swine specialist and former Provincial Vet of Cavite), Dr. Cesar Tiongson (Manager at Inphilco), and Dr. Felimon Tumanguil and Dr. Rolando Columna (poultry experts and businessmen).

Specialized and Companion Animal Experts: The world of exotic medicine and small animal practice was brought to life by Dr. Agerico Sebastian (Manila Zoo consultant and expert in exotic birds and koi), along with Dr. Lourdes Amparado and Dr. Fortunato Hernandez, who shared the latest trends in Companion Animal Practice.

The Vet as an Entrepreneur: Dr. Gavino Matel, alongside Drs. Naranjo and Tumanguil, inspired students by discussing the diverse business opportunities within the veterinary profession.

The soul academe expert, retired faculty member Dr. Justina Mamallo also shared her insights to those who are called to teach in the academe.

Beyond the Classroom-A key highlight of the day was the Guided Campus Tour, where the guest experts visited CSU-CVM’s facilities, interacting with students in their own learning environment. This was followed by intensive technical sessions where the practitioners broke down complex field scenarios that are often pivotal in board exam questions.

The day culminated in a high-energy Open Forum, where students engaged directly with Dr. Tom Acorda and the panel of experts. The discussion focused on practical board exam strategies, the transition from academia to professional practice, and the evolving landscape of veterinary medicine in the Philippines.

IN PHOTOS | The DA-Philippine Carabao Center at Cagayan State University (DA-PCC at CSU) congratulates the interns from the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) of CSU Carig Campus. They successfully completed their On-the-Job Training (OJT) at the DA-PCC at CSU’s National Swamp Buffalo Gene Pool and Dairy Buffalo Farm in Baung, Piat, Cagayan.

Eight Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) students were able to finish their month-long OJT last February, which provided them with valuable hands-on experience and practical exposure in animal production, health, and management. They have performed various activities that strengthen their knowledge and develop their skills in animal handling under the supervision of DA-PCC at CSU staff, led by Dr. Phoebe Lyndia T. Llantada, Farm Supervisor, and Dr. Aileen L. Bulusan, the Center’s Veterinarian.

Likewise, the DA-PCC at CSU would like to extend its gratitude to the CVM faculty of CSU Carig Campus for the outstanding contributions of their interns to the Center’s farm operations that enhanced their professional growth. The continued collaboration of DA-PCC at CSU with its partner institutions remains strong, which leads to greater impact in the communities.

To these DVM students of CSU Carig Campus, thank you for choosing DA-PCC at CSU. Soar high, and may God bless you all in your future endeavors.

Following their active participation in the tree planting activity of Cagayan State University on March 25, 2026, the faculty members of the College of Veterinary Medicine demonstrated a strong commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development. The activity, held at the designated orchard site in CSU-Piat, served as a meaningful extension of the university’s initiative to promote ecological balance and responsible land management.

CVM Department Chair and assistant to the dean Dr. John Michael U. Tabil, Campus Director for Academic Affairs and Campus Veterinarian Dr. Maricel F. Campañano, and CVM TVET coordinator Ma'am Jeremy Tanguilan joined fellow university officials and stakeholders in planting a variety of fruit-bearing and native trees, contributing not only to reforestation efforts but also to the long-term vision of establishing a productive and sustainable orchard. Their involvement reflected the interdisciplinary role of veterinary professionals in supporting environmental health, recognizing the close link between animal health, ecosystem stability, and human well-being.

Beyond the physical act of planting, the participation of the CVM faculty highlighted the importance of collaboration in addressing environmental challenges. By engaging in this activity, they reinforced their advocacy for One Health principles, emphasizing that caring for the environment is integral to safeguarding animal and public health.

The experience also fostered camaraderie among participants and strengthened the faculty’s connection with the broader university community. It provided an opportunity to model environmental responsibility for students and future veterinarians, encouraging them to take part in initiatives that contribute to sustainability and resilience.

Through their involvement, the CVM faculty reaffirmed their role not only as educators and researchers but also as stewards of the environment—committed to nurturing a greener, healthier future for generations to come.
