USTP Villanueva, through its Research, Innovation, and Extension (RIE) Team, formally presented four proposed research studies for the Sericulture Project on April 15, 2026, at the Provincial Capitol. The presentation was initiated by Campus Director, Professor Colbert G. Rabaya and delivered by Mr. Reymark-John Macapanas, Research, Innovation, and Extension Head.

The proposed studies integrate machine learning and neural network models in mulberry cultivation, silkworm gender classification, cocoon grading and product development, and the socio-economic implications of sericulture in Brgy. Imelda, Villanueva, Misamis Oriental. These research initiatives aim to provide data-driven support to enhance project implementation and ensure long-term sustainability.

In collaboration with the Provincial Government of Misamis Oriental and partner agencies, USTP Villanueva reinforces its role in advancing applied research and extension services toward inclusive and community-driven economic development.

Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental — March 26, 2026

The University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP), under the leadership of System President Dr. Ambrosio B. Cultura and Villanueva Campus Administrator Prof. Colbert G. Rabaya, officially solidified its partnership with the PHIVIDEC Industrial Authority through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing held on Thursday, March 26, 2026, at 12:30 PM.

The event took place at the PHIVIDEC Administration Building within the PHIVIDEC Industrial Authority Complex in Tagoloan, gathering key officials, stakeholders, and representatives from both institutions. Leading the PHIVIDEC delegation was CEO & Administrator Atty. Joseph Donato J. Bernedo, alongside PHIVIDEC-IA officers, Deputy Administrator I, Atty. EnP Hyessa S. Suegay, Deputy Administrator I, Operations, Benjamin C. Medrano, Enterprise Assistance Division Chief, Support Services, Ian Valencia.

The MOA signing marks a significant milestone as USTP – Villanueva Campus is formally recognized as a PHIVIDEC locator, strengthening its role as a strategic partner in regional industrial and economic development. Notably, USTP Villanueva stands as the first and only university in the Philippines nestled within a pre-existing industrial ecozone, uniquely positioning it at the intersection of academia and industry.

This distinction enables the university to further enhance its contributions in research, innovation, workforce development, and industry collaboration within the PHIVIDEC Industrial Estate, providing students with direct exposure to real-world industrial environments.

The open-house event also highlighted opportunities for collaboration between academia and industry, reinforcing shared commitments to sustainable development, technological advancement, and inclusive growth in Northern Mindanao.

In his message, Dr. Cultura emphasized the importance of aligning academic programs with industry needs, while Prof. Rabaya reaffirmed the campus’s dedication to producing globally competitive graduates. Meanwhile, Atty. Bernedo underscored PHIVIDEC’s vision of fostering strong partnerships that drive economic progress and community development.

This partnership underscores a shared vision between USTP and PHIVIDEC to cultivate innovation ecosystems that empower students, industries, and local communities alike.

Evans Rosauro I. Yonson, Assistant Professor of USTP Villanueva, has formally taken his oath as Executive Council Member for the Academe under the National Committee on Communication of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

Yonson currently serves as Program Head of Technology Communication Management and as Academic Head of USTP Villanueva campus bringing to the Council a strong background in communication, academic leadership, and cultural engagement.

As a member of the Executive Council for the 2026–2028 term, he is expected to contribute to policy and program directions that strengthen cultural dissemination through communication. This includes advancing strategies that make culture more accessible and meaningful across diverse publics, supporting the integration of research and pedagogy into cultural communication initiatives, and fostering collaboration among academic institutions, media practitioners, and cultural stakeholders.

His role also involves helping articulate communication frameworks that respond to evolving information environments—ensuring that Philippine culture is not only preserved but actively shared, interpreted, and experienced by communities.

Through this appointment, Yonson joins a national effort to position communication as a critical bridge between culture and society.

This milestone also reflects USTP Villanueva’s unwavering commitment to academic excellence and cultural engagement—an institution not only producing knowledge, but shaping narratives, cultivating meaning, and asserting its place in the continuing discourse of nation-building through culture.
