What Do Food Scientists & Technologists Do?

They Cook? Do They Work In Restaurants? Are They A Chef? Do They Create New Foods? What Exactly Do They Do?

The job of a food scientist or technologist is as crucial as any other occupation. We have to ensure that mould does not grow on the bread that we consume every day; we have to check for various toxic chemicals that may be contaminating our food supply; we have to develop new ice creams and chocolates that are low in fat because of the increasing obesity rates; we model and design different types of food equipments; we have to ensure that you can keep your milk much longer with minimum treatment; and most importantly, we make sure that your shelves in the supermarkets are filled with a wide variety of food choices that are affordable, appealing, safe and nutritious. These are issues that many people do not realize and take for granted.

A world without food scientists and technologists would also mean: no way to keep food fresh; nutrition would be a guessing game; food would look and taste bad; food would cost a lot more; dinner would take all day to prepare; food would be unsafe to eat; there wouldn’t be enough food for everyone; Won’t be any new creation of foods; increase in food poisoning cases; limited type of foods; and limited choices of food in the supermarket.

The good news? Thousands of dedicated food science/technology professionals are preventing this frightening scenario from becoming a reality. They are developing safe, nutritious, healthy and plentiful food consumers eat daily.

Strengthening of Research Culture:
Universities are known by research and its quality. If we remove research from Universities, these are reduced to merely community Colleges. This research may be pure research focused on existing natural phenomenon or Applied research to bring better efficiency and performance in various operations and processes.

Being a core researcher and teacher:
Dr.Attaullah Shah endeavoured to create a culture of Research and Inquiry at KIU.

Some of his major achievements are:
1.Established KIU Graduate School where MS programs were stared in 16 prograns which include Project Management, Business Managemnt, IR, Economics, Environment, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Plant Sc, Animal Sc, Geology, Education etc. PhD were also started Envir, Animal and plant Sciences, Business Managemnt and Mathematics. Today more than 400 students are enrolled in KGS. This has increased involvement of faculty in research at one hand and assists the various stakeholders at the other hand.
2. Establishment of Office of Research Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC)
This office mainly focuses on tailoring research to local and national needs, connecting with public and private organizations for joint resesrch and commercialize some resesrch dividends to new products and services. The Consultancy Services under ORIC, actively engaged with GB Govt P&D Department,GBDMA UNDP, ICIMOD, WWF, SCO, Punjab IT Board and many more partners for joint resesrch and projects. ORIC has been actively involved with UNDP in undertaking research studies under GLOF2 projects in 17 valleys of GB. Besides it, protocols for Public Private Partnership are being approved to initiate various projects with Private sector. The Business Incubation Centre has been strengthened.
3. The first ever resesrch journal of KIU called Journal of Mountain Areas Research has been approved by HEC under category Y. The journal's articles are double blind reviewed by international reviewers and only good quality articles are published.
4. To foster research thinking in students, Research Colloquiums, Research Seminars and workshops are regularly held. All graduate students have to present their research proposals in Synopses Workshops. Students are encouraged to author quality research papers in renowned journals.
5. High focus is laid over hunting research projects from various sponsors such as HEC, PSF, DAAD, World Bank funding, British Academy funding, US Aid Funding and many more. The faculty is being trained for writing research grant proposals to hunt research funding
5. Faculty has been encouraged to develop their resesrch proposals under Faculty Research Grants. More opportunities see given to young PhD faculty so that they can develop their careers.
6. All these efforts for promoting research culture at KIU has proved very useful and a large number of Faculty has authored good number of quality resesrch papers in renowned journals. Faculty is given some honraria such authorship. The cumulative impact factor at individual faculty level and collective KIU level has increased manifold as a result. Today a good number of TTS faculty and PBS faculty are involved in high quality research across different Desciplines.
