LAHORE: God has created all of us equal-with similar talents and skills. You have to discover your talent and make the best of it. I don’t think that you can single out somebody by saying that they are God-gifted. All of us are God-gifted, we just don’t realize it,’ said Naseeruddin Shah, in a dialogue with students organized by Benazir Bhutto Chair at the Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) on December 4th, 2013.
Naseeruddin Shah is on a visit to Lahore, Pakistan with this theatre company Motley. He took out the time along with his co-actor Rajit Kapoor to interact with students, organized by Mrs. Moneeza Hashmi at the main campus of LCWU. He was addressing the selected audience students and faculty from four universities of Lahore: Lahore College for Women University, Kinnaird College for Women University, Beacon House National University and Lahore University of Management Sciences.
In a candid conversation, Naseeruddin Shah talked about his early years. He said that he ran away from home at the age of 16, to make name for himself in the film industry in Mumbai. But because he had no money, and he was no good at waiting tables and cooking he went back home. He said that had he not returned home, he would have been a famous chef by now but would not have the opportunity to act.
He also urged the students to remain motivated and not give up on their aims. He also spoke about the difficult times that he saw as an actor when he started out. Naseeruddin Shah said in his struggling period he ended up rehearsing for a play on a local train along with hi co-actor Om Puri and Ratna Pathak Shah. He said in those days they used to rehearse anywhere they would find space like a beach or a bus. He gave an example of how he used to stammer as a child, and he had to work excruciatingly hard to get his speech right. He said theatre is one medium where one can connect with the audience directly. In films one has to connect to machine which is not satisfying at the end of the day as it just gives financial return.
Talking about the similarities and differences in Indian and Pakistani nations, Naseeruddin Shah said the Pakistanis are less cynical than Indians and Pakistani youth is very restless and wants to do something to fix things where as Indians have become complacent with what they have and are happy the way they are.
Rajit Kapur talking about how to motivate students and kids to participate in theatre said that parents along with educational institutes have to play a part in it. He said even as a society you can form small groups in your localities and encourage kids to participate in them.
The dialogue was moderated by Adeel Hashmi who was at his humorous best. His smart jokes kept the audience alive and engaged.
