May God bless him with immediate recovery(Amen)

Mr. Fida Hassan, a graduate of LUMS, Lahore, has been diagnosed with Blood Cancer. Belonging to a financially humble family from district Nagar of Gilgit-Batlstain, Mr. Fida studied at LUMS through the prestigious LUMS National Outreach Programme.

After reviewing his reports, the Shukat Khanam Memorial Cancer Hospital(SKMCH), Lahore has declared that the patient is at 4th stage of cancer and his free treatment is not possible in the hospital.

Unable to bear the highly expensive cost of the treatment, the aggrieved family has appealed to the Governments(federal and provincial) as well as the entire nation for generous donations.

I know mental illness is considered a social taboo and a person having mental trouble is not easily accepted in our society. I am forty five and have been living in Edhi Homes for thirteen years. I had a daughter of 2.5 years but she died of pneumoniaI. I have a son too; he lives with my mother and studies in a school. After my daughter's death I got mentally ill and used to get out of my home often, even after midnight for no reason. I was struggling through emotional instability back then, so my family left me here. They were ashamed of my mental sickness and abandoned me. It was in a difficult phase of my life and I felt depressed. My family members from mother side are not accepting me to live with them because of my illness, and that there is no room available. So, I preferred Edhi Homes. It has become my home for a long time. They provided me with food, shelter and medical treatment. I am totally sane now and want to go home to be with my family. Few months ago, my mother in law came here and told me that my husband was getting married; I started crying and requested her to take me back home as I have recovered from my illness but she didn’t listen. Months have passed and I am still waiting for her but haven’t heard from her since then. I think I would never be reunited with my family. I am getting a treatment in Edhi homes and hope to get better soon. My son says that once he starts earning, very first thing he will do is to get me out of here and shift me with him in a new home.

When I got married, I moved to Dubai with my husband. Like every young girl, I thought that my life was going to be better with my husband in my new home. But life took a new turn when my husband labeled me as a mentally ill person and accused me of suffering from mental disease since I got married to him. It was unacceptable to me, but he had already decided to send me back to Pakistan, and I couldn’t make him change his decision. I was sent to Pakistan to live with my brother but unfortunately my own brother didn’t accept me because his wife and family wouldn’t approve of it, so that’s how I came to Edhi Homes. Had my parents been alive, I wouldn’t have been living this life. I have a son; he lives in Iran and studies there. He comes to visit me very rarely. I didn’t even know about Edhi Homes before I came here with my brother. He promised me that he will send me to pilgrimage so I wait for the moment when he fulfills his promise. I have spent fifteen years of my life in Edhi homes and this is first Ramzan without Edhi Sb. He was such a great soul. I remember, he used to fast, pray and treated us all like his own family.

Before coming here, I used to sell clothes on a footpath. Life took a turn when I met an accident and had to quit my job. I had no money to spend on my treatment and medication so 9 months back; I decided to come to Edhi Homes. Now I get proper medication and they take good care of me. Having a home in Karachi and still staying away from family is painful beyond words. I have a son who is not mentally stable and my wife looks after him; she gives him bath, changes his clothes, clean our home and cook. My wife’s relatives help us financially and this is how we meet our ends. My son lives alone in the room we have. He often gets furious and beats her. I can’t go back because then my wife will have to look after both of us and she will be over-burdened. I neither enjoy at home nor here because when I visit my home once a week, I get more depressed to see my mentally ill son and my helpless wife. I am treated with kindness and they take care of me here but I still worry for them!
