Department of Forensic Sciences - Swat Official page of the Department of Forensic Sciences at the University of Swat Criminal forensics has recently been made popular by TV shows such as CBS’s CSI.

Forensic is the application of science widely used in the judgments of legal cases or disputes. The role of the forensic scientist is to provide the justice system with unbiased and scientifically precise information. These scientists specialize in examining physical evidence to link a crime scene, suspect, and/or victim. The field of forensic science has received extensive exposure in recent year

s and is now regarded as a highly respected discipline among scientists and criminality. Due to immense importance of forensic sciences, the Department of Forensic Sciences at University of Swat was established in 2014 to facilitate teaching of the basic ideas and concepts of forensic sciences to upcoming forensic scientists and students or persons already associated with the legal field. It is the first department for the subject of forensics in the province of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and, the first in the country to offer BS in Forensic Science, 1st batch of which graduated in 2021.

Our Forensic Science students recently took a significant step toward their professional careers with an immersive technical visit to the Regional Forensic Science Laboratory (RFSL).

Moving beyond textbooks, students explored the high-stakes world of forensic analysis through five specialized departments:

The campus turned into a field laboratory as our Forensic Science students brought MINICON 2025 to life with 8 meticulously planned Mock Crime Scene Reconstructions. πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈπŸ”

From homicides and arson to hit-and-runs, our student teams demonstrated elite teamwork and strict adherence to forensic protocols. In an effort to strengthen inter-university relations and academic standards, the University of Swats BS Forensic Science students (5th and 7th Semesters) visited the prestigious GC University Lahore (GCU). This visit provided a valuable opportunity to explore key departments relevant to life sciences.

The students toured the facilities of the Department of Botany and the Department of Zoology, which included a visit to the historical Zoology Museum. The visit was thoughtfully conducted and guided by Dr. Uzma Hanif (Chairperson, Department of Botany) and Dr. Zafar. The interaction allowed our students to gain insight into the foundational biological sciences that underpin forensic analysis.

The University of Swat is grateful to the GCU administration and especially to Dr. Uzma Hanif, Dr. Zafar, and the faculty for their warm welcome and time. The University of Swats BS Forensic Science students (5th and 7th Semesters) concluded their educational tour at the PCSIR Laboratories Complex, Lahore. This visit provided unique exposure to the role of scientific research in industrial and national development.

The informative visit was comprehensively conducted by Dr. Yasir (Head of Biotechnology), alongside Dr. Nisar, Dr. Najeeb, and Dr. Abid. Students observed key areas of focus such as Biotechnology, Analytical Testing, and specialized R&D work, which helped them appreciate the wider application of science and chemical analysis beyond traditional forensics.

The University of Swat's BS Forensic Science students (5th and 7th Semesters) visited the internationally recognized Centre of Excellence in Molecular Biology (CEMB), affiliated with the University of the Punjab, Lahore. This experience provided a crucial look into advanced genetic research, including a specialized visit to their forensic lab.

The valuable tour was expertly conducted by Dr. Islam Khan and Dr. AB, alongside guidance from Dr. Shafique (Head of Forensic Lab). The University of Swat continues its commitment to high-quality practical exposure as its BS Forensic Science students (5th and 7th Semesters) completed an intensive visit to the premier Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) in Lahore. This immersion provided invaluable insight into the operational standards of criminal justice support in Pakistan.

The detailed briefing and comprehensive tour of the specialized forensic divisions were expertly conducted by Dr. Saima and Dr. Shahzad. Students gained crucial, firsthand observation of modern technologies and methodologies in areas like DNA profiling, fingerprint analysis, and ballistics.

The University is profoundly grateful to the Director General (DG) PFSA and the entire administration for facilitating this enriching experience.
