How do males and females cope with ocean warming? 🌊🌡️
In our latest study published on Global Change Biology, we exposed Gammarus locusta, a key intertidal amphipod, to four warming scenarios and uncovered striking s*x-specific responses. Females showed higher thermal tolerance and broader safety margins, while males exhibited reduced plasticity under heat stress. 🧬 Our metabolomic analysis revealed distinct differences in stress and energy-related pathways between s*xes. ⚧️🦐
These differences could lead to skewed s*x ratios, limiting mating opportunities and disrupting population stability as the ocean continues to warm. ⚠️ 🌊
By linking organismal fitness with cellular metabolism, our study provides valuable cross-scale insights into how marine invertebrates may respond to global change. 🌍
