CICECO-Aveiro Institute of Materials

CICECO-Aveiro Institute of Materials CICECO is an associate laboratory of the University of Aveiro with researchers from Chemistry, Materials and Ceramic Engineering and Physics departments.

The associate laboratory CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials, formerly CICECO-Centre for Research in Ceramics and Composite Materials, was created in March 2002 at the University of Aveiro, Portugal, with the mission of developing the scientific and technological knowledge necessary for the innovative production and transformation of ceramics and organic-inorganic hybrids and materials for a su

stainable development. CICECO is the largest Portuguese institute in the field of materials science and engineering, comprising 46 academic staff, 29 full-time researchers and, in December 2014, 86 post-doctoral associates, 120 PhD students, and ca. 78 other students. Director

our mission

Developing the scientific and technological knowledge necessary for the innovative production and transformation of materials for a sustainable development and the benefit of society (from ceramics to soft matter and hybrids). our vision

To strengthen our leading role as an inter-disciplinary European research laboratory in the field of materials;

Contribute to the development of a scientific culture at the national level and educate students to high levels of scientific literacy;

Stimulate innovation within the industrial sector. main lines of expertise

i) Information and Communication Technology;

ii) Energy and Industrial Applications;

iii) Sustainability and Health;

iv) Computing and Modelling. scientific production

CICECO is one of the most productive research institutes in the country in all scientific areas. Between 2002-13 we have produced:

an average publication of 4.7 SCI (Science Citation Index) papers per year per academic staff or full-time researcher;
4094 SCI papers (many in top journals);
99 patents;
204 PhD theses. international context

CICECO is a truly international research centre. For example:

41% of our full-time researchers and 42% of post-docs are not Portuguese nationals;
we are part of the main stream materials research in Europe;
we are actively involved in the Network of Excellence 'Functionalised Advanced materials and Engineering of Hybrids and Ceramics', FAME, and in the INTERREG IIIB 'Materials Network for the Atlantic Area', or in Integrated Projects such as 'Innovation and Sustainable Development in the Fibre Based Packaging Value Chain';
we are running the two Erasmus Mundus M.Sc. courses, the 'Joint European Masters Programme in Materials Science' with the universities of Aalborg and Hamburg, and a FAME programme;
we hosted one of the first and very few Portuguese Marie Curie Training sites, 'Advanced Ceramic Materials: Synthesis & Structure'. knowledge transfer

CICECO is also committed to knowledge transfer to industry, through its Centre for Materials Design and Technology - CDTM. Our spin-off company FoodMetric (now terminated) was started together with the Food Chemistry Group of the Organic Chemistry, Natural and Agrofood Products Research Unit of the Chemistry Department of the University of Aveiro. Other CICECO spin-offs include:

SMALLMATEK - Nanotechnology solutions applied to the protection against corrosion (running)

BRAVESOUND- Materials and devices for microelectronics (in stand by)

TETRACARBON - solutions based on advanced ceramics and materials coated with diamonds (terminated)

In 2006, CICECO started a consortium with some 6 SME companies, IDPoR, 'Research and Development Platform on Polymers from Renewable Sources'. equipment

CICECO is probably the best equipped institute in the country to perform research in materials science. In particular, we are the focal point of the Portuguese Electron Microscopy Network and also house the top solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance facilities. We are also one of the best equipped national centres for X-ray diffraction (single crystal, powders and films).

How can Europe turn excellence in materials research into industrial technologies and products?

In a new Comment published in Nature Materials, Paula Vilarinho, from CICECO and the Department of Materials and Ceramic Engineering at the University of Aveiro, and Sean Kelly, from the Nanotechnology Industries Association, discuss the structural barriers limiting the scale-up and industrial deployment of advanced materials in Europe.

Drawing on the discussions of the Future of Advanced Materials in Europe (FAME) Workshop, held at the University of Aveiro in November 2025, the authors identify five priorities:
• Scale-up infrastructure and pilot facilities
• Private investment and new financing mechanisms
• More integrated regulatory pathways
• Stronger links between materials developers and industry
• Skills and expertise for materials industrialisation

The Comment also highlights the importance of connecting research excellence with the conditions needed for industrial deployment, from laboratory prototypes to first industrial production.

The publication further reinforces the role of the CICECO Materials Observatory, created to bring scientific evidence into discussions on the strategic role of materials in science, industry and public policy.

CICECO is part of Clara-Value, an innovation project led by Fabridoce Doces Regionais, transforming egg white, a by-product of Ovos Moles de Aveiro PGI, into sustainable food packaging.

Since Ovos Moles de Aveiro PGI are made exclusively from egg yolks, large amounts of egg white go underused. Clara-Value turns this by-product into a high-value raw material, unlocking economic, technological and environmental benefits.

🌱 Rooted in bioeconomy and circular economy principles, the project replaces fossil-based packaging with bio-based alternatives, including:
🔹 Transparent natural films
🔹 Cellulose fibre-reinforced biocomposites
🔹 Functional coatings for paper
🔹 Moulded cellulose products with enhanced barrier properties

These food-contact materials could package not only Ovos Moles but a wide range of other products too.

🤝 Co-funded by COMPETE 2030, Clara-Value is coordinated by Fabridoce and brings together CICECO, Biopol, RAIZ / The Navigator Company, APOMA and Derovo combining expertise in food production, materials science, cellulose technologies and bioplastics.

As Rui Almeida, CEO of Fabridoce, put it: tradition and innovation can evolve together, turning an underutilised by-product into new materials, products and market opportunities.

Beyond cutting food waste, Clara-Value aims to build new value chains for egg white, supporting a more circular, bio-based economy.
