Abstract of the presentation:
Human-made structures have always been influenced and inspired by nature. Their design followed the availability of natural resources such as material with its structural characteristic and occurring shape, and the forces of nature and function they have to withstand. The art of designing structures both by nature and artificially, is to resist acting forces with the means available in the most efficient way. One key to this efficiency lies in finding the most optimal shape accounting for material strength and workability on the one side and the functionality and durability of the structure on the other. Natural and engineered structures have to fulfil similar tasks and it is therefore understandable that humans have drawn inspiration from the solutions nature comes up with from an evolutionary design process of constant evolvement and testing. This lecture takes a closer look on some of the design concepts in nature and their relation to human architecture and construction.
