Iberian Polyphonic Music

This project aims at undertaking a comprehensive analytical study of the different Iberian polyphonic repertories of the late 15th and early 16th centuries

This three-year project, launched in June 2016, is directed by João Pedro d'Alvarenga at CESEM (FCSH-Universidade Nova de Lisboa). Its main goal is to carry out a comprehensive analytical study of the different polyphonic repertories produced in the Iberian Peninsula in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. This is a crucial time, prior to the decisive permeation of Franco-Flemish models, which

apparently became dominant in local composition of polyphonic music from the late 1520s onwards. The project will highlight distinctive technical and stylistic traits and compositional processes in these repertories, exposing correlations between them, and also consider their different genres and contexts of production, dissemination and use.

A very fruitful session today, dealing with different aspects of the project. Probably the most interesting discussion has been about the criteria for selection of the repertory that we will be analysing. Which pieces, authors, styles, genres will make a good sample?
