The ITN Project FOIE GRAS - Bioenergetic Remodeling in the Pathophysiology and Treatment of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is an international doctoral school sponsored by H2020 MSCA that will train 13 ESRs. The European Training Network (ETN) FOIE GRAS: Bioenergetic Remodeling in the Pathophysiology and Treatment of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is an international doctoral

school sponsored by H2020 Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions that will train 13 Early Stage Researchers (ESRs). FOIE GRAS project links extensive expertise in liver diseases, metabolism research, gut-liver crosstalk and science in society, hosted in distinguished universities and academic institutions, together with biotechnological companies and one patient’s association, located in Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Czech Republic, Poland, and Portugal. The ESRs will have access to this inter/multidisciplinary expertise, timely technology transfer know-how, and international exchanges within an excellent training programme. FOIE GRAS aims to:

• Investigate how internal and external mediators underlying metabolic dysfunction, including hepatic bioenergetic remodeling and modified gut-liver crosstalk, influence NAFLD progression;

• Ascertain novel biomarkers and therapeutic /lifestyle targets;

• Develop and implement science in society initiatives addressing NAFLD awareness; and,

• Train a new generation of researchers, clinicians biotech entrepreneurs, and science communicators, with a novel attitude and full understanding of the requests of academia, clinical practice, technological companies, and the societal challenges.

🔥 Harsh*tha Shanmugam (ESR 11) from Università degli Studi di Bari Aldo Moro 🇮🇹 concluded her PhD last month 🔥

Entitled "Randomized controlled trial testing the effects of Mediterranean diet, healthy lifestyle habits, and COVID-19 pandemic lockdown on subjects with Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease", her thesis hypothesized that weight loss achieved by a lifestyle intervention program could improve liver steatosis, fibrosis, and the biochemical profile in Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients. Even moderate adherence to Mediterranean diet was sufficient to reverse fatty liver by at least one grade and reduce the fat depositions in the body. Furthermore, the thesis addressed how COVID-19 pandemic lockdown could maginify factors of prior metabolic risks and promote unhealthy lifestyle habits among NAFLD population.

🔥 Inês Simões (ESR 1) from Instytut Biologii Doświadczalnej im. M. Nenckiego PAN 🇵🇱 concluded her PhD last week 🔥

During her PhD research work, entitled "Effects of Western diet in the development and progression of Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease", Inês has hypothesized that the onset of a pro-oxidant state act as the trigger to mitochondrial and hepatic-related alterations that may drive by a non-reversible way the disease progression into NASH. Using an in vivo NAFL mice model, she has addressed the distinct role of hypercaloric diets (fat, sucrose or combined fat and sucrose) in an early stage of NAFLD. Furthermore, she has investigated the specific end-points for mitochondrial dysfunction that govern NAFL progression along time. Additionally, she validated a next generation of therapeutics for early stage of NAFLD based on smart antioxidant delivery to mitochondria.

In his study, "Fructose Metabolism and Lipogenesis Fluxes in Mice Models of Diet-induced Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease", he established mice models using previously recommended approaches to learn fructose metabolism and the contribution of high fructose and/or high fat diets to de novo synthesis of liver triglyceride in diet induced mice models of NAFLD.

Bárbara's research work aimed to investigate the role of the gut-liver axis in the pathophysiology of NAFLD: specifically, the effects on hepatic lipid metabolism of GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA) or bariatric surgery (Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, RYGB) in non-diabetic subjects with morbid obesity and NAFLD and the changes in gut integrity after high-fat high-sugar diet in an animal model of NAFLD.

During his PhD, entitled "Targeting liver cell metabolism and function in Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease", Tawhidul studied the role of cell death linked to mitochondrial bioenergetic and metabolic function in human and experimental NAFLD and NASH, and evaluated the therapeutic relevance of multiple targeting approaches in the resolution of the disease.
