Cyclosis movements in Elodea cells. Cyclosis movements, also known as cytoplasmic streaming, are the directed flow or movement of the cytoplasm within a cell.
Cyclosis is the active circulation of cytoplasm around the cell, usually driven by interactions between actin filaments (part of the cytoskeleton) and myosin motor proteins.
Cyclosis functions: i) enhances transport of nutrients, metabolites, and signaling molecules; ii) distributes organelles evenly within the cytoplasm; iii) Improves gas exchange and waste removal in large cells; iv) helps maintain homeostasis by mixing cytoplasmic contents.
