🎓👏Meet Our FCT PhD Fellows 2026

PhD candidate: Luca Serrière
Supervisor: Jorge Almeida

Project: Material of things and some things about material
🏆4th place in the FCT ranking list
This project explores how humans perceive materials (such as wood, plastic etc..) and its relevance in identifying objects. Given that material exists as part of an object but also as its own thing, we will look at the neural correlates differentiating these two material representations and how these interact with object identity.

PhD candidate: Gonçalo Borges
Supervisor: Jorge Almeida

Project: Fake News in the Real Brain
While computational systems identify fake news with high accuracy, humans remain vulnerable due to motivated cognition and reliance on heuristics. Combining fMRI, machine learning and advanced analytics, this project explores the neural signatures of conscious and unconscious fake news detection and processing to better understand how misinformation is processed in the human brain and inform strategies to mitigate its impact.
