Recently, Jacinta Pinho and Manuela Gaspar, from , with the collaboration of researchers from iMed.ULisboa, IST, Universities of Coimbra and Utrecht have published in Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy Journal a pre-clinical study of liposomes containing a new dual acting hybrid molecule against melanoma (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.biopha.2022.114021).

Furthermore, these results were featured, this week, on ASPIC, the Portuguese Association for Cancer Research (https://www.aspic.pt/en/noticias/preclinical-validation-new-hybrid-molecule-loaded-liposomes-melanoma-management #.Y-aZZnbP3Ms).
The relevance of the developed work comprises the in vitro and in vivo validation of a newly synthesized hybrid molecule. Particularly, after incorporation in liposomes this nanoformulation exhibited higher antitumor effect towards subcutaneous and metastatic melanoma, compared to approved drugs, dacarbazine and temozolomide, devoid of toxic side effects.

Congratulations to all the authors that took part in this work of extreme importance!

This week, the members of iMed.ULisboa and , Maria Eugénia Meirinhos Cruz, Maria Luísa Corvo, Maria Bárbara Martins, Sandra Simões and Maria Manuela Gaspar have published the work "Liposomes as Tools to Improve Therapeutic Enzyme Performance", a review paper included in the Special Issue "A Commemorative Issue in Honor of Professor Gregory Gregoriadis: Liposomes for the Delivery of Drugs and Vaccines" from Pharmaceutics (https://doi.org/10.3390/pharmaceutics14030531).
Professor Gregory Gregoriadis is considered the pioneer of the use of liposomes as drug delivery systems. The authors would like to thank Gregory Gregoriadis for the consultancy and support to the research group in Lisbon, and the opportunity to participate in the fruitful meetings and courses in the liposomes field. Authors owe him his vision, inspiration and pioneering work that allowed the start of a new area of Pharmaceutical Technology and to provide weapons against many diseases.
Great work!

The drugs concept has changed during the last few decades, meaning the acceptance of not only low molecular weight entities but also macromolecules as bioagent constituents of pharmaceutics. This has opened a new era for a different class of molecules, namely proteins in general and enzymes in parti...
