The Opening Ceremony of the 5th Erasmus Gender Seminar and Military Gender Studies Multiplier Event, held on the 19th and 20th of June at the Portuguese Military Academy, was chaired by the Minister of National Defense, Professor Helena Carreiras.
In her speech, the Minister said that she “wants more women in the Armed Forces, but warns that the focus on numbers is “insufficient”.
Helena Carreiras underlined the importance of studying the "level of peer acceptance among cadets and what happens when women assume leadership roles".
"The basic formula of adding women and shaking it up is simply not enough to challenge structural inequality and drive real change," she said.
"It is important to investigate to what extent young cadets, men and women, adapt (or not) to the military culture and its predominantly male environment, what is the level of acceptance by peers among cadets and what happens when women assume leadership roles".
Stressing that "war and gender have always been intertwined", Helena Carreiras stated that "culture has created different gender roles, and war, despite a growing number of women in the Armed Forces, is still seen as a male activity, where the majority of soldiers are still men".
"This justifies the question of knowing whether education and training in Higher Military Studies Institutions continue to favor the creation of a male soldier", pointed out the minister, who specializes in military sociology, with published work on women in the Armed Forces.
The Chief of Staff of the Army (CEME), General Eduardo Mendes Ferrão, said that currently the branch has 1293 women, which corresponds to approximately 13% of the total staff.
"Equality is today an unavoidable theme and diversity enriches any institution. Therefore, it is necessary to develop concrete actions that allow us to look to the future and trust that we are moving towards a more progressive society", pointed out the general.
On the other hand, Colonel Nevena Atanasova, Chairperson of Line of Development 10 - Gender Mainstreaming Military Erasmus (EMILYO) Implementation Group, highlighted the importance of the MGS project in the investigation and training of cadets, from all Military Academies belonging to the implementation group.
She also mentioned the relevance of the MGS team in the development of the Common Module Gender Perspectives in Security and Defense and the success of the first edition of the common module in Austria.
