IPFN - Instituto de Plasmas e Fusão Nuclear Instituto de Plasmas e Fusão Nuclear - Associate Laboratory

IPFN's programme is made possible by:

- The contract of Associated Laboratory (LA) granted, in November 2001 by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), to CFN with participation of CFP;
- The Contract of Association signed on January 1st 1990 between the European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM) and IST (CA-EURATOM/IST). The resulting framework has provided a unique setting for world-c

lass research, fostering scientific and technological excellence in an internationalized context, enabling a stable growing evolution towards a new level of organizational structure, that has culminated with the foundation of IPFN-LA. Leveraging on our wide range of expertise, in our vision IPFN-LA promotes a culture of ambition and leadership, in a permanent pursuit of the most far-reaching and intellectually demanding scientific and technological problems, attracting the best talents in our areas to work in an exciting environment, strongly networked with other world-leading institutions. Our global position allows us to act as a central hub for research, advanced formation and training, and technological transfer in Plasma Physics and Engineering, Controlled Nuclear Fusion, Lasers and Photonics, and Advanced Computing. Our high expertise allows us to have an important participation in the landmark EU large-scale research projects (e.g. JET, ITER, HIPER, ELI) through the collaboration in the scientific and technical activities of these projects, and the active presence on their governing boards. The IPFN-LA will continue to play a key and defining role in the most important international research projects in our fields of activity, as well as in the future directions of EU and Portugal science policy, advising Government agencies in our areas of expertise and contributing to shape the role of the Council of Associated Laboratories as the de facto Portuguese science policy think-tank.

IPFN was present at Técnico Open Day, on 18 April, at Instituto Superior Técnico (Alameda Campus, Lisbon), with a full day of activities and laboratory visits that brought research closer to the public.

In Salão Nobre, the activity "The Journey of Lasers and Plasmas" Invited visitors to explore plasma through a toroidal plasma ball, gas discharge tubes and a light diffraction experiment used to measure the thickness of a human hair, using a laser beam. Virtual reality simulations developed by Group of Lasers and Plasmas extended this experience, from plasma accelerators to astrophysical scenarios. The VOXEL lab 3D model added a glimpse into next Generation X-ray imaging.

"Can we recreate the energy of the starts on Earth?", was the theme of another activity, focused on nuclear fusion, combining an interactive quiz with a 3D model of the ITER reactor.

Across campus, IPFN opened the doors of the ISTTOK tokamak, whilst the Quantum Information and Quantum Optics Lab (QIQO), a joint initiative with Instituto de Telecomunicações, was introduced to the public for the first time.

This day relied on a strong team effort:

Hands-on activities: Andre Beverido, Ankur Nath, Bernardo Barbosa, Bhushan Thakur, Chiara Badiali, Daniel Hachmeister, Gonçalo Teixeira, Joaquim Augusto Valente Nogueira, Lucas Inigo, Marco Costa, Mário Vaz, Óscar Amaro, Susana Muiños, Zahra Chamazkoti

Lab tour: Carlos Silva, Emmanuel Cruzeiro, Horácio Fernandes

A special thank you to everyone involved and to all who engaged with IPFN throughout the day. 🙌

In our most recent weekly seminar, Diogo Carvalho presented "Studying the PIC collision operator using data-driven methods."

Particle-in-Cell simulations capture the self-consistent motion of finite-size charged particles and their electromagnetic fields 🧲 ; finite particle size modifies collisional dynamics and leads to a modified collision operator. He surveyed 🧐 the established theory, demonstrated recent data-driven verification ✅️ , and connected these results to ongoing efforts to learn collision operators from PIC simulations 💡.
