Estabelecido em 1853 como o primeiro Observatório Meteorológico e Geofísico Português, o IDL evoluiu para um Instituto integrado do Sistema Terra, com investigação em Terra Sólida, Oceano e Atmosfera, as suas interações e relevância para uma sociedade sustentável. A equipa do IDL, com investigadores de 6 universidades portuguesas, junta diferentes disciplinas das Geociências, usando conhecimentos
destas áreas para promover abordagens interdisciplinares aos desafios globais do século XXI em alterações climáticas, gestão de riscos naturais, recursos e energia. O IDL tem uma comunidade vibrante de estudantes de doutoramento, muitos a realizar a sua investigação em colaboração com instituições internacionais, e todos focados em contribuir para revistas científicas de topo nas suas áreas de investigação. Os investigadores do IDL utilizam métodos da Geologia, Física, Matemática e Engenharia, contribuindo assim para uma melhor compreensão da dinâmica e ambiente do Planeta Terra, desde uma escala geológica até à escala de tempo humana.

Established in 1853 as the first Portuguese Meteorological and Geophysical Observatory, IDL has developed into an integrated Earth System Institute, with research in solid Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric processes, their interactions, and their relevance for a sustainable society. The IDL team, with researchers in 6 Portuguese Universities, brings together different Geosciences disciplines, and builds on their knowledge to promote interdisciplinary approaches to the 21 century global challenges on Climate Change, management of Natural Hazards, Resources, and Energy. IDL hosts a vibrant community of PhD students, many pursuing research within international collaborations, all focused in contributing to leading scientific journals in their fields. IDL researchers apply methods from Geology, Physics, Mathematics and Engineering, to contribute to a better understanding of the Earth dynamics and environment, from geological to human timescales.
