The post-doctoral research of Maria Alessandra Bilotta involves, since 2007, the southern France illuminated juridical manuscript production, especially in Toulouse, Montpellier and Avignon between the late 13th and the first half of the 14th century . She has developed a research methodology that aims to consider these manuscripts and their illustration as the result of an original and creative process based on travels, exchanges and interactions of illuminators; on the circulation of objects, manuscripts, patrons and patterns, as well as on the sharing of common knowledge in the north Mediterranean geographical areas (Italy, Southern France, Iberian Peninsula.

📜 Now preserved in the Biblioteca Comunale Augusta in Perugia, this manuscript reminds us that even in the Middle Ages, legal professionalism was already a community of shared knowledge and principles.

🎨 Manuscript Highlights | “Soluto matrimonio” – The Dissolution of Marriage
Today’s takes us to medieval France and to a remarkable visualization of Roman law.
🕯️ This illumination from the Digestum (Paris, Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève, Ms. 394, fol. 4r) depicts a bishop declaring the dissolution of a marriage — a vivid interpretation of Roman law as received and reimagined in the medieval world.
📜 The rubric Soluto matrimonio (“When the marriage is dissolved”) introduces one of the most intricate topics discussed in the Corpus Iuris Civilis: the legal and moral implications of ending a lawful union.
🎨 Attributed to the French School, the miniature combines legal symbolism and visual elegance. The bishop’s authoritative gesture, the solemn posture of the couple, and the delicate color palette all underscore the interplay between justice, ritual, and human emotion.
