Global Studies were defined in 2010 as a pivotal strategic research field for the renewal of Social Sciences at large in the School of Social Sciences and Humanities (NOVA-FCSH). The DOCTORAL PROGRAM ON GLOBAL STUDIES (DPGS), which was created as a result, is now intended to acquire a more ambitious scope through the engagement of other clusters of excellence in research at UNIVERSIDADE NOVA DE LI
SBOA (NOVA). The DPGS is conceived as collaborative experience of graduate teaching promoted by NOVA, the first involving so many branches of knowledge. It has the direct participation of two R&D units: IPRI (NOVA-FCSH), and CENSE (NOVA-Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia). Key collaboration with direct responsibility in specific seminars and fields concerning Global Studies is also provided by senior scholars belonging to three other colleges, whose large international experience is a guarantee for the DPGS: Teresa Beleza, Dean of the Law School (NOVA-Faculdade de Direito), Álvaro Ferreira da Silva, Associate Dean of Economics (NOVA-School of Business and Economics), and Luís Lapão (NOVA-Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical). The DPGS covers eight different domains of research: (i) global history and the study of imperial and colonial processes (NOVA-FCSH); (ii) democratization and global governance (NOVA-FCSH); (iii) global security (NOVA-FCSH); (iv) global health and epidemiological diseases (NOVA-Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical); (v) global economy and development (NOVA-School of Business and Economics); (vi) human and social rights (NOVA-Faculdade de Direito); (vii) environmental sustainability and climate change (NOVA-Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia); and (viii) migration and development (NOVA/FCSH). The DPGS will also collaborate with other Portuguese institutions: (a) Instituto de Defesa Nacional, Instituto de Altos Estudos Militares, Instituto Diplomático, Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal, Arquivo Nacional da Torre do Tombo; (b) foundations with an interest in promoting research, such as Gulbenkian Foundation, Luso-American Foundation, Orient Foundation; (c) finally, some banks and corporations may provide external funding for the DPGS in order to enlarge the organization of lectures, conferences, visiting professors, and some extra fellowships. The DOCTORAL PROGRAM ON GLOBAL STUDIES (DPGS) is funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology. O Ciclo de Estudosde Doutoramento em Estudos sobre a Globalização (DEG) é financiado pela Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia
