Utopia 500

Utopia 500 Utopia500 project aims to engage the public in the notion of utopia as a driver for social change and as a source of inspiration for innovation.

Utopia500 could be briefly described as a commemorative programme of the 500th anniversary of Thomas More's Utopia, and is being carried out globally over 2016. Despite this being the official presentation of the project, we should also mention that since the summer of 2015, when more and more young professionals and students from all over the world started to join the Utopia500 team, it quickly

evolved into a more composite and diverse concept that could be fairly called a utopian movement. Utopia500 project is commemorating the 500 years of utopias at a global scale and includes four main subprojects — Great Utopians, Sounds of Utopia, PAN-Utopia and ARUS (Advanced Research in Utopian Studies) — along with a forthcoming international conference (Lisbon, 5-9 July). Another major event in which Utopia 500 will be participating is the celebrated literary festival Folio (Óbidos, September/October). We are willing to illustrate how Thomas More’s “Utopia” can reflect in our modern world and inspire us to think over the ways of re-defining our society and creating positive change around us.

🔊 Last week, we returned to Escola Secundária de Valongo to lead the workshop “Telling Stories Across Generations: Archive and Documentary Practice”, supporting students in the development of their intergenerational school project.

🔦 Together, we explored documentary cinema, its different forms and approaches, while watching various documentary clips to show students that there is no single way of telling a story and to encourage creative experimentation.

📚 We also discussed interviews, oral histories, family trees, biographies, and the importance of archives and “small histories”, introducing different ways of conducting research both online and through archival materials.

🍉 Through discussion and collaborative exercises, students were encouraged to think about storytelling as a way of preserving memory, connecting generations, and rethinking how personal histories can become part of a wider collective history.

🎬 Last week we visited the city of Valongo and the Escola Secundária de Valongo to do our triptych workshop series through three different sessions exploring cinema, storytelling, and creativity.

🎥 During the first session, students were introduced to the theme “Utopia and Dystopia in Film and TV Series”, where we combined theoretical discussion with the screening of clips from different films and television series. Together, we explored how cinema imagines possible futures, societies, and worlds, while reflecting on social and political ideas such as Afrofuturism, Feminist Utopias and representation.

✨ In the second session, “The Art of Filmmaking”, students learnt about the film genres, the filmmaking process, the different roles within a film crew, and the collaborative nature of cinema production. Through a group activity, they began developing the initial concepts and structure for what will become their own short films during the final session of the workshop.

💬 Through discussion, collaboration, and creative experimentation, students had the opportunity to engage with film not only as viewers, but also as emerging creators and storytellers. We are excited to see the ideas developed during these sessions come to life in the final stage of the project.

Björk is an artist who consistently reshapes the boundaries of what music can be, blending sound, visual art, and conceptual ideas into immersive creative worlds. Emerging from Iceland’s distinctive cultural landscape, her work draws deeply from nature, technology, and human emotion, often imagining new ways for people to connect and coexist.

Rather than following traditional structures, she approaches each project as its own ecosystem, where sonic textures, imagery, and themes are intricately linked. In Utopia (2017), she imagines what emotional life might look like after healing, turning away from grief toward the careful construction of a gentler world.

Rather than presenting a perfect or effortless paradise, the album suggests a fragile space shaped by vulnerability, where connection, creativity, and openness replace fear and distance. Songs like *Arisen My Senses* feel like stepping into a new landscape, while *The Gate* reflects the cautious act of reopening oneself to love.

This vision of utopia is not detached from reality but grows directly out of it, grounded in the belief that tenderness can emerge even after deep emotional rupture. The sound of *Utopia* reinforces this vision through its organic, immersive design. Layers of flutes, birdsong, and airy electronic textures create an ecosystem rather than a traditional album structure, where each element feels alive and interconnected.

In tracks like *Blissing Me*, intimacy is stripped down to its purest form, imagining relationships free from ego and conflict. The accompanying visuals extend this world, blending human forms with plant and animal life to suggest a future where boundaries between nature and humanity dissolve.

Altogether, the album becomes less a collection of songs and more a speculative environment, proposing a softer, more empathetic way of existing.

🫗The Quote of the Day reflects on utopia as a process of regeneration rather than return, a reconstitution of the self and the social beyond fixed identities.

🦿Donna Haraway is a key figure in feminist theory and science studies, known for challenging boundaries between human and non-human, nature and technology, and fixed categories of identity.

🔺In this passage, Haraway introduces the notion of the “monstrous” not as something to be feared, but as a necessary radical figure that disrupts norms, especially the binary structures of gender.

🚀In this vision, utopia is not purity or perfection, but a world where we are free to become strange, hybrid, and unclassifiable beyond the limits of gender and with the demand to be whole.

The artwork, The Blue Chairs, can also be understood on an emotional level, as a quiet moment frozen in time.
The blue chairs do not feel like simple objects; they feel like the presence of people who have just left or are about to return. The strong blue color creates a feeling of calm, but also a slight sadness, like a summer afternoon slowly coming to an end.
There is a silence in the painting that is not empty it is full of memories, waiting, and unspoken moments. The chairs seem to “hold” the space, as if they are waiting for someone who was loved, even if that person is no longer there.

Yannis Tetsis was one of the most important Greek painters of the post-war period. He was born in Hydra and studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts. His work is characterized by intense chromatic power, a particular sensitivity to light, and inspiration from the Greek landscape and everyday life. He was also an engraver and academic, while he taught at the Athens School of Fine Arts, influencing many generations of artists.

Mental health is still surrounded by stigma, myths, and silence, but it does not have to be. Every struggle, every diagnosis, every quiet moment carries a real story that deserves understanding, not judgment.

In this post, we break down the misconceptions and uncover what mental health really looks like: honest, human, and worth talking about.

"What if we chose to see the world as art? 🌍✨
In our latest blog post, we explore a simple but transformative shift: moving from seeing things only for their function to truly noticing them, their patterns, textures, and rhythms. From the quiet movement of steam rising from a cup of coffee to the unnoticed details in a cracked sidewalk, the everyday begins to reveal new meaning.

This perspective invites us to slow down, to pay attention, and to engage more deeply with the world around us. It opens space for curiosity, empathy, and imagination, essential elements in rethinking how we live and learn.

In a utopian vision, this way of seeing becomes a shared practice, a more attentive, connected, and meaningful way of being together.

The world doesn’t change, but how we experience and shape it does. 🌱"

🛎️ The Quote of the Day turns utopia away from the solitary thinker and back toward the living pulse of society.

📜 Enzo Traverso is a historian whose work engages with critical theory, the Holocaust, Marxism, totalitarianism, revolution, and contemporary historiography.

🔭 In the words of Enzo Traverso, utopia is not written into existence but instead, it grows from feelings that circulate, intensify, and demand expression.

🔨 His words redefine the role of intellectuals: not as creators of utopia, but as mediators who give form, language, and visibility to already existing desires for change.

🙌 Last week we had the pleasure of visiting the Escola Profissional de Comércio Externo, not once, but twice!

🌱 Across two sessions, we delivered our workshop “Youth Topics & Inclusion”, where students didn’t just listen, they truly engaged. Through a mix of interactive presentations and open discussions, we explored themes like adolescence as a driver for social change, inclusion in school spaces, gender identity, sexual orientation, and the importance of radical care.

✍️ To wrap up, students took part in a reflective writing exercise, creating short autobiographies to share with someone meaningful to them.

💬 The result? Honest conversations, powerful self-reflection, and a space where everyone could connect more deeply, with themselves and with each other.

💙 Moments like these remind us how important it is to keep creating safe spaces for dialogue, empathy, and growth.
