🇵🇹 O grupo CQVR - Environmental Chemistry partilha a publicação de mais um artigo. O Doutor Nuno Jorge e a aluna de Doutoramento Rita Teixeira publicaram um artigo na prestigiada revista internacional Q1 da Elsevier “Environmental Research” (IF = 8.3), com o título “Winery and olive mill wastewaters treatment using nitrilotriacetic acid/UV-C/Fenton process: Batch and semi-continuous mode”. O artigo lida com a aplicação de um sistema em batch e em semi-continuo, para o tratamento de efluentes reais de vinho e azeite. Ácido nitrilotriacético (NTA) foi utilizado como agente quelante para reduzir a precipitação de ferro e aumentar a eficácia dos sistemas. O artigo pode ser consultado no site:

🇺🇸 The CQVR - Environmental Chemistry group shares the publication of another article. Doctor Nuno Jorge and PhD student Rita Teixeira published an article in the prestigious international Q1 Elsevier Journal “Environmental Research” (IF = 8.3), with the title “Winery and olive mill wastewaters treatment using nitrilotriacetic acid/UV-C/Fenton process: Batch and semi-continuous mode”. The article deals with the application of a batch and semi-continuous system for the treatment of real winery and olive mill wastewaters. Nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) was used as a chelating agent to reduce iron precipitation and increase the efficiency of the systems. The article can be consulted on the website:

🇵🇹 Muitos Parabéns ao mais recente doutor do grupo CQVR - Environmental Chemistry Nuno Jorge pela sua excelente prestação na defesa das suas provas de doutoramento intitulada: "Winery wastewater treatment by coagulation-flocculation and Advanced
Oxidation Processes (AOPs): water reuse and sustainability for cellars", sob orientação dos Drs José Alcides Peres e Marco
Lucas Sousa. As provas foram realizadas no dia 21 de julho na Universidade de Vigo, com um júri constituido por: Dr. Juan García Rodríguez (Universidade Complutense de Madrid), Dra Mariá José Rivero Martínez (Universidade de Cantabria) e Dr. Joaquín Ramón Domínguez Vargas (Universidade de Extremadura).

A sua tese de doutoramento mereceu a qualificação máxima "Sobresaliente" por unanimidade dos elementos do Júri.

🇬🇧 Congratulations to the most recent doctor of the CQVR - Environmental Chemistry Nuno Jorge for his excellent performance in the defense of his doctoral thesis entitled: "Winery wastewater treatment by coagulation-flocculation and Advanced
Oxidation Processes (AOPs): water reuse and sustainability for cells", supervised by Drs José Alcides Peres and Marco
Lucas Sousa. The defense was held on July 21st at the University of Vigo, with a jury formed by: Dr. Juan García Rodríguez (University Complutense of Madrid), Dr. Mariá José Rivero Martínez (University of Cantabria) and Dr. Joaquín Ramón Domínguez Vargas (University of Extremadura).

His doctoral thesis was awarded the maximum qualification "Sobresaliente" unanimously by the members of the Jury.

🇵🇹 Nos dias 29 e 30 de junho, realizou-se o 3rd International Meeting on New Strategies in Bioremediation Processes (BioRemid2023), na School of Life Sciences - University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW) em Muttenz, Suíça.
O Grupo Environmental Chemistry foi representado pelas investigadoras Ana Gomes, Ana Rita Teixeira e Leonilde Marchão, com as seguintes comunicações:
1. Ana Gomes com apresentação em painel intitulada "UV-A-based processes for the reduction of Aspergillus brasiliensis spores";
2. Ana Rita Teixeira com apresentação em painel intitulada "Long term aerated storage and photo-Fenton process applied to winery wastewater treatment";
3. Leonilde Marchão com apresentação oral intitulada "Winery wasteater valorisation by Chlorella Vulgaris in small scale receway reactors".

🇬🇧 From the 29th to the 30th of June, the 3rd International Meeting on New Strategies in Bioremediation Processes (BioRemid2023) was held at the School of Life Sciences - University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW) in Muttenz, Switzerland.
The Environmental Chemistry Group was represented by the researchers Ana Gomes, Ana Rita Teixeira and Leonilde Marchão, with the following communications:

Dear colleague,

We are delighted to announce the 8th International Sol-Gel Society (ISGS) Workshop focused on Sustainable Sol-Gel Energy Materials (SUSGEM 2023), which will be held in Castelló de la Plana, a pleasant Mediterranean-style city in the east of Spain, from October 1st to 4th, 2023.

SUSGEM 2023 will cover different topics related to the development of sustainable sol-gel energy materials (smart coatings, films, inks, particles, powders, aerogels) targeting applications in energy harvesting, generation, conversion and storage, thermal insulation, sensing, IoT devices, anti-counterfeiting, catalysis, and other related fields.

These meetings aim at gathering together young students, early career researchers, and well-recognized world-leading scientists in a relaxed atmosphere to facilitate and generate the exchange of scientific information and knowledge.

SUSGEM 2023 will include a welcome reception, a gala dinner, and an optional cultural outing (October 5th), so you can relax and enjoy the beauty of Castelló de la Plana.

🇵🇹 Foram duas semanas em grande para o grupo CQVR - Environmental Chemistry que marcou presença em dois congressos internacionais!

Nos dias 9 a 11 de Maio a estudante de doutoramento Leonilde Marchão participou no Young Alganeers Symposium - YAS 2023 em Faro, com uma comunicação em painel "Production of Chorella vulgaris in small scale outdoors raceways using winery wastewater".

A UTAD foi anfitriã do 8th PYCheM - Portuguese Young Chemistry Meeting" de 17 a 19 de Maio, contou com a participação de vários membros do grupo, que também colaboraram na organização deste evento. A bolseira Ana Gomes apresentou o trabalho "Inactivation of Aspergillus Brasilliensis spores in water using advanced oxidation processes" em Poster. A estudante de doutoramento Rita Teixeira participou com uma comunicação em Poster intitulada "Treatment of olive washing water by coagulation-flocculation-decantation and UV-A/Fenton". A aluna de doutoramento Leonilde Marchão apresentou uma comunicação oral com o título "Cultivation of Chlorella vulgaris in winery wastewater for nutrient removal and biomass production". O aluno de doutoramento Nuno Jorge fez uma apresentação flash intitulada "Treatement of Agro-industrial wastewater bach vs continuous system". Para terminar, o mais recente membro do grupo, o investigador júnior Sérgio Silva apresentou o trabalho "The effect oleate in the biological nitrogen removal".

🇬🇧 It was a two great weeks for the CQVR - Environmental Chemistry group, which was present at two international congresses!

From the 9th to the 11th of May, PhD student Leonilde Marchão participated in the Young Alganeers Symposium - YAS 2023 in Faro, with a panel presentation "Production of Chorella vulgaris in small scale outdoors raceways using winery wastewater".

UTAD hosted the 8th PYCheM - Portuguese Young Chemistry Meeting" from the 17th to the 19th of May, with the participation of several members of the group, who also collaborated in the organization of this event. The research fellow Ana Gomes presented the work "Inactivation of Aspergillus Brasilliensis spores in water using advanced oxidation processes" in Poster. PhD student Rita Teixeira participated with a paper in Poster entitled "Treatment of olive washing water by coagulation-flocculation-decantation and UV-A/Fenton". PhD student Leonilde Marchão presented an oral presentation entitled "Cultivation of Chlorella vulgaris in winery wastewater for nutrient removal and biomass production". PhD student Nuno Jorge made a flash presentation entitled "Treatement of Agro-industrial wastewater bach vs continuous system". Finally, the most recent member of the group, the junior researcher Sérgio Silva, presented the work "The effect oleate in the biological nitrogen removal".

🇵🇹 O Grupo CQVR - Environmental Chemistry partilha a publicação do artigo “Enhancement of EDDS-photo-Fenton process with plant-based coagulants for winery wastewater management”, na prestigiada revista Q1 da Elsevier Environmental Research (IF = 8.431). Este artigo faz parte da tese de doutoramento do aluno Nuno Jorge, desenvolvido a partir de plantas colhidas no Jardim Botânico da UTAD e utilizadas para a produção de coagulantes orgânicos com capacidade para tratar efluentes reais provenientes da produção de vinho. Em adição foi testado com sucesso a aplicação de um agente quelante (ethylenediamine-N,N′-disuccinic acid trisodium salt - EDDS) para reduzir a precipitação de ferro em processos de Fenton solar a pH 6.0. Os resultados mostraram um aumento da biodegradabilidade deste tipo de efluentes.

🇺🇸 The CQVR - Environmental Chemistry Group shares the publication of the article “Enhancement of EDDS-photo-Fenton process with plant-based coagulants for winery wastewater management”, in the prestigious Q1 journal of Elsevier Environmental Research (IF = 8.431). This article is part of the doctoral thesis of the student Nuno Jorge, developed from plants collected in the Botanical Garden of UTAD and used for the production of organic coagulants capable of treating real wastewaters from wine production. In addition, the application of a chelating agent (ethylenediamine-N,N'-disuccinic acid trisodium salt - EDDS) was successfully tested to reduce iron precipitation in solar-Fenton processes at pH 6.0. The results showed an increase in the biodegradability of this type of wastewaters.

🇵🇹 No dia 3 de Março, o Grupo de CQVR - Environmental Chemistry participou no EliteSci - Student conference, com duas apresentações orais:
1. A aluna de PhD Ana R. Teixeira apresentou o trabalho "Degradação de parabenos por Processos de Oxidação Avançados", na sessão Ciências Químicas e Biológicas;
2. O aluno de PhD Nuno Jorge apresentou o trabalho "Treatment of agro-industrial wastewater by coagulation-flocculation-decantation and advanced oxidation processes", na sessão Ciências, Tecnologia e Gestão do Mar.

🇺🇸 On the 3rd of March, the CQVR - Environmental Chemistry participated in the EliteSci - Student conference, with two oral presentations:
1. PhD student Ana R. Teixeira presented the paper "Degradation of parabens by Advanced Oxidation Processes", in the Chemical and Biological Sciences session;
2. PhD student Nuno Jorge presented the work "Treatment of agro-industrial wastewater by coagulation-flocculation-decantation and advanced oxidation processes", in the Science, Technology and Sea Management session.

🇵🇹 O grupo CQVR - Environmental Chemistry partilha a publicação de mais um artigo, “Decolorization of the azo dye Reactive Violet 5 by UV-A-Fenton and Ultrasound-Fenton Processes” na prestigiada revista Engineering Proceedings. Neste trabalho, é realizada uma comparação entre os processos UV-A-Fenton e ultrasons-Fenton para a remoção de um corante têxtil (reactive violet 5). Os resultados mostraram que ambos os processos revelaram ser eficientes para o tratamento de efluentes contaminados com corantes têxteis.

🇺🇸 The CQVR - Environmental Chemistry group shares the publication of another article, “Decolorization of the azo dye Reactive Violet 5 by UV-A-Fenton and Ultrasound-Fenton Processes” in the prestigious journal Engineering Proceedings. In this work, a comparison is made between the UV-A-Fenton and ultrasound-Fenton processes for the removal of a textile dye (reactive violet 5). The results showed that both processes proved to be efficient for the treatment of effluents contaminated with textile dyes.

🇵🇹 O Grupo CQVR - Environmental Chemistry partilha a publicação de mais um artigo, “Heterogeneous Photo-Fenton Oxidation of Methylene Blue Solution Using Fe(II)-Montmorillonite Calcinated Clay Catalyst” na prestigiada revista Engineering Proceedings. Este é um trabalho original, criado pelo aluno de PhD Nuno Jorge, em que uma argila sódica (bentonite) foi utilizada como material base para criar um catalisador à base de ferro. Os resultados adquiridos pelo FTIR e DRX mostraram uma impregnação com sucesso do ferro na argila. Após a aplicação do catalisador, registou-se uma grande remoção do corante MB e uma reabsorção do ferro até níveis inferiores aos legislados. Em conclusão o catalisador pode ser utilizado com sucesso no tratamento de efluentes contaminados com corantes têxteis.

🇺🇸 The CQVR - Environmental Chemistry shares the publication of another article, “Heterogeneous Photo-Fenton Oxidation of Methylene Blue Solution Using Fe(II)-Montmorillonite Calcinated Clay Catalyst” in the prestigious journal Engineering Proceedings. This is an original work, created by PhD student Nuno Jorge, in which a sodium clay (bentonite) was used as base material to create an iron-based catalyst. The results acquired by FTIR and XRD showed a successful impregnation of iron in clay. After the application of the catalyst, there was a great removal of the MB dye and a reabsorption of iron to levels below the legislated. In conclusion, the catalyst can be successfully used in the treatment of wastewaters contaminated with textile dyes.
