International Youth Initiative Program (YIP) is a holistic educational program for youth 18 - 28 in

40 participants aged 18 to 28, from all over the world, live and learn together for 10 months in Järna, Sweden. Participants work with international experts, doers and innovators to gain a holistic understanding of the current challenges humanity faces. Through hands-on workshops, projects and internships, they learn to use entrepreneurial principles and skills to create initiatives that meet thes

As part of the ‘Local to Global’ week, we visited Skilleby Trädgård, a local Biodynamic Agriculture initiative and heard from Martin Fellkvist. 🌾

We had a glimpse into the deeply caring and thoughtful ways we can farm, how spending years listening to and learning from nature, can gift us so much in return. The diversity, color and beauty in the gardens brings balance and joy also to the human who experiences it.

Farms such as this one are doing vital work for our future, relearning how we can survive and thrive with nature. As well as providing a contrast to the dominant farming methods of our time: industrial, monocultural agriculture, that have no regard for the interconnected whole. 🌍

Below we can read some beautiful words written by YIP 19 participant Hanna about her experience of the ‘Introduction and Landing Week’. 🌷

“My feet were the first of YIP19 to arrive at Tallevana - part of the nineteenth group of young people to settle into this building of stories, memories, and history. So many have passed through these walls before us, each transformed on their own journey of becoming.

And now, us. A bunch of individuals brought together to form a group, at a certain place and at a certain time. Soon, the quiet space started to fill with new voices, languages, instruments, and questions. The common room buzzed like a beehive with new ideas, thoughts, connections, and stories yet to be written.

The surrounding landscape became a big part of the Introduction and Landing, with misty and crisp mornings, rainbows, and cold dips in the Fjärd. Dinners were held outside Almandinen, catching the last rays of the August sun, blessed with an abundance of vegetables planted by YIP18 in the garden back in spring.

The Introduction and Landing reminded me of a seed. It contained something from the past, while also holding an unknown future. We each arrived carrying our own backgrounds, experiences, expectations, and rhythms. At the same time, we began becoming part of the shaping and forming of something new.”

Introduction Week at YIP is designed around two key principles:

1. To hear and see everyone everyday.
2. Arriving in the: place, people, program.

The week is shaped so that we meet each other in many different ways: through games, intentional conversation, being in nature, sharing meals and service tasks. A taster for the many different ways we hope to meet each other throughout the year.

🏞 Through a campus orientation and walking through the beautiful surrounding land, we settle in the place which will hold us for part of the coming year.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 We spend the week landing in our new YIP community, as well as meeting with locals who are busy in the area, and those who will be hosting our creative sessions.

🗓 With an overview of the coming courses and opportunities, the team introduces the program and its design principles. Participants are invited into the ethos behind the rhythms and care structures within YIP, and to co-create a fruitful environment through community agreements.

Contributor Reveal: Christianne Aikins Returns!

We are very glad to soon welcome back Christianne Aikins to lead the course “Beyond Narratives: War and Conflict”

❓What to expect: This week will explore how we can can stretch beyond the common lenses that we use to understand war and conflict. This asks of us to unpick the ways in which frameworks and language embedded in our daily lives uphold injustice. For example, looking at systems and ideologies such as capitalism, colonialism, imperialism, racism, islamaphobia and orientalism, within ourselves and the world. Using critical thinking we will explore important and relevant case studies, asking questions such as: what does it reveal when we approach war and conflict through a lens of justice and historical understanding?

📣 Christianne is an educator, facilitator, and ‘development practitioner’ based in Beirut, using participatory approaches to support security sector reform with police and military, primarily in Lebanon and Jordan, and engages with civil society in support of peacebuilding and social cohesion programming. As a big believer in education as a transformative process, Christianne has also developed educational programs and facilitated workshops on a range of topics, including: climate change, war and conflict, race, gender, and political economy.

YIP19 has landed! The opening ceremony comprised welcoming words from the Organising Team, community and alumni, a musical contribution from Andreas Bagge and a creative presentation by the new YIP cohort. The participants created a soundscape of harmonies whilst each member contributed a word and drawing into the centre, forming a puzzle which encapsulates the intentions and strands that come together from all over the world to meet each other here in Ytterjärna.

In YIP tradition, each new participant was met by a member of the community with a sunflower. This gathering of community felt important, as the participants begin to learn and feel the context, meaning and depth of the place and people here. 🌻

Today, at 2pm we will welcome YIP19 into their first steps of this 10 month journey. 🌀

The opening ceremony will take place on the stage of the Kulturhuset from 14:00-15:30. Everyone is warmly invited!

The land, community and team have eagerly anticipated the participants arrival, who have travelled from far and wide. The magic and excitement grows in the air as the next year begins. The season is slowly beginning to turn here in Sweden, leaves yellowing and apples falling, marking sheddings and new beginnings as a new community forms.

Contributor Reveal: Elias Diaz Returns!

We are excited to welcome back Elias Diaz to lead the course: Being Human in a Technological Age!

Based in the Philippines, Elias is a facilitator dedicated to surfacing contradictions in our digital evolution. He explores how cultural impulses can empower civil society to counterbalance market imperatives through "civic technologies." Currently, he is actively working with an environmental coalition in the Philippines to stop destructive infrastructure projects linked to recent national corruption scandals. ✊

🤖 What to expect: Humanity has been thrown into the deep end of the virtual world. How do we navigate this without fear or blind immersion? In this course, many questions will be explored: What is consciousness, and can AI achieve it? Should AI have rights? What about human sovereignty? Can wisdom traditions guide technological development? Do the environmental costs of AI justify climate solutions? And many more!

If you are interested in exploring these questions with YIP19, welcome! This is an OPEN COURSE that will take place in Xi’An, China.
