As early voting opens in Sweden’s general election, questions about AI, trust, and democracy are more relevant than ever.

To help elected representatives, political candidates, journalists and public officials navigate a rapidly changing digital landscape, Linköping University has launched a new learning platform that brings together research-based knowledge on artificial intelligence, digitalisation and their impact on democracy.

“It is crucial that public administration and democratic institutions use AI in communication in a way that keeps people confident and wanting to contribute to welfare,” says Elin Wihlborg, professor of political science at LiU, who is behind an initiative aimed at increasing understanding of the impact of AI on society and our trust in democracy.

A new study from Linköping University shows that even mild COVID-19 can cause long-lasting eye problems that standard eye tests often fail to detect. Researchers have now identified biological changes behind the symptoms and developed a way to diagnose them.

In a criminal investigation, timing can be everything. When did someone drink alcohol — and how much? Those questions are often crucial in cases involving violence or drink driving.

Now, researchers at Linköping University have developed a method that can provide more precise answers.
Using a so-called digital twin, the method makes it possible to reconstruct alcohol consumption in retrospect — helping investigators better understand what happened and when.

Henrik Pedersen researches the chemistry behind our modern, connected society. With a strong passion for increasing public understanding of why research matters, he is happy to leave his lab to meet both primary school students and TV viewers and explain difficult-to-grasp processes.

“We need to demystify the scientist. People often think that if you’re a professor, you’re some oldish, half-crazy person who can’t be among people. This could be quite dangerous and create a distance to the research world. So it’s fun to get out there and show people that I’m a scientist and an ordinary person – with a very exciting job.”

Playing a little extra with your dog improves the emotional bond between owner and dog, according to a new study from Linköping University. However, training did not give the same results. The study is relevant for all dog owners, whether they have young or adult dogs.

“Today, many dogs change homes in the middle of their lives. With rescue dogs, you don’t have the advantage of growing up with your dog. This means that you miss the so-called socialisation window early in your puppy’s life, which is important for relationship building. And then play can be a very good way to build a new good relationship even with adult dogs,” says Lina Roth, senior associate professor of ethology at LiU.

World premiere of the dome film Once Upon the Moon! 💫
The film allows the audience to experience the moon landings in the 1970s as if they were there themselves. Authentic footage, astronauts’ own stories and the latest visualisation technology make this possible. Produced at Norrköpings Visualiseringscenter C and Linköping University, the film will be shown worldwide.

“Once Upon the Moon brings back a lot of the feeling of actually being in space,” said Marcus Wandt, one of the astronauts featured.
