The 2026 WMU Summer Academy on Maritime Decarbonization brought together maritime professionals from 13 countries for five days of intensive learning, discussion and knowledge exchange. The sold-out programme explored the regulatory, technological, operational and economic dimensions of the maritime energy transition, from alternative fuels and renewable energy to ship design, ports and financing.

If you're a seafarer, shipping company, port authority, fuel provider, maritime administration, marine pollution response equipment manufacturer, marine pollution responder or marine pollution researcher, we need your insights!

WMU and CEDRE, with support from the European Maritime Safety Agency, are conducting a study to provide a comprehensive analysis of ammonia as a marine pollutant and the response measures for accidental releases.

The WMU–Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute contributed to the 2026 Summer Academy “UN and the Sea: Ocean Governance and Maritime Affairs”, organized by the Regional Chapter North of the United Nations Association of Germany (DGVN).

WMU experts delivered sessions on:
🔹 The UN and ocean governance
🔹 Dispute resolution in ocean governance

The sessions explored the legal, institutional and policy dimensions of ocean governance, while also highlighting the role of the United Nations and international organizations in addressing contemporary ocean and maritime challenges.

WMU is pleased to welcome Lieutenant Commander Adam Birch of the United States Coast Guard (USCG), who has joined the faculty as a Guest Lecturer within the Maritime Safety and Environmental Administration specialization.

LCDR Birch brings extensive experience in maritime safety and regulatory oversight, having served as a Marine Inspector in the US and Europe before most recently serving as Chief of the Inspections Division at USCG Marine Safety Unit Chicago.

His two-year secondment to WMU reflects the longstanding and valued relationship between WMU and the USCG, which has supported the exchange of maritime expertise and strengthened cooperation in education, training and maritime safety for decades.

We look forward to the experience and expertise LCDR Birch brings to WMU and our students.

🛳️ WMU strengthens alternative fuels training in the Caribbean

WMU, in collaboration with the International Maritime Organization - IMO and MTCC Caribbean, delivered a regional seminar in Trinidad and Tobago to equip maritime trainers with the knowledge and skills needed to prepare seafarers and shore-based personnel for the safe adoption of alternative fuels and new technologies.

The five-day programme covered ammonia, methanol, hydrogen, batteries and carbon capture and storage, combining technical training with practical and pedagogical sessions.

Through continued collaboration with IMO and regional partners, WMU is supporting the development of the skills and capacity necessary for the maritime sector’s transition to new fuels and technologies.
