We’re sorry for the construction work on campus! 🚧

We know things feel a bit chaotic right now. Construction on the Universum building is underway at the same time as the University Library is being rebuilt, which affects accessibility on campus.

🔹 The footbridge between the Social Sciences Building (Samhällsvetarhuset) and Universum is closed until approximately 14 September while pipes/cables under Universitetstorget are being relocated.

🔹 Construction traffic may occur in the area around Universum.
🔹 Visiting a service or department that used to be located in Universum? Find your way using Mazemap! 🗺️
🔹 For current information on closures, service disruptions, and changes on campus, visit Akademiska Hus's website in the comments.

Thank you for your patience while we build the campus of the future. 💙

People who participate in colorectal cancer screening may have as much as a 43 percent lower risk of dying from the disease. This is shown by new estimates from researchers at Umeå University and Karolinska Institutet. 🩺🩻

The findings are based on up to 14 years of follow-up data from the colorectal cancer screening programme in the Stockholm-Gotland region. The study included more than 376,000 individuals.

“Population-based screening is a public health initiative that affects a large number of people. It is therefore important to evaluate its effectiveness,” says Håkan Jonsson, researcher at the Department of Epidemiology and Global Health at Umeå University and one of the scientists behind the study.

Congratulations to Professor Emerita Asta Pellinen-Wannberg on receiving the President’s Award from the Union of Radio Science (URSI) for her work promoting and supporting women in radio science! 🔭💫

“It is remarkable that a question I raised publicly in 2015 about where all the talented women in this heavily male-dominated field could be found has grown into a global initiative. I am deeply honoured to receive this award,” says Asta Pellinen-Wannberg of the Department of Physics.

💫 Fun Fact: In 2017, Asteroid 11807 Wannberg was officially named by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in honour of Asta Pellinen-Wannberg to recognize her groundbreaking work using high-power, large-aperture scattering radars to study how meteors interact with Earth's atmosphere.

Big news for brain research in Umeå!🧠 🎉

Seven research projects at Umeå University have received 9 million kronor from the Swedish Brain Foundation (Hjärnfonden), as part of its allocation of SEK 190 million to 122 research projects across Sweden. Umeå's share of national funding has grown to 4.7%, the highest it's ever been. 📈

"This is a clear recognition of the high quality of our brain research — and it shows our researchers are doing well in the competition," Katrine Riklund, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Umeå University.

What does this mean in practice?
💡 Real progress toward better diagnostics and treatment for brain diseases — research that could one day change lives.
👏 Huge congratulations to all the researchers involved!

From words to action in climate education ♻️🌐

Students learn a great deal about the climate, but that knowledge does not always lead to action. In a new project, Johanna Lönngren, Associate Professor at the Department of Science and Mathematics Education, will investigate how climate education can be designed to drive greater change.

“The problem is that teaching focuses on developing knowledge, rather than on how it can be used to bring about actual change,” says Johanna Lönngren.

Hybrid work improves the work experience – particularly for women 💻

The transition to hybrid work has improved the psychosocial work environment among white-collar employees, according to new research from Umeå University. Positive effects include more accessible leadership, greater autonomy over work tasks, and an increased ability to complete work within regular working hours.

“Many organisations offer employees the opportunity to work remotely, but the debate remains active and there is still a lack of research-based guidance on how hybrid work should best be designed. We hope that our findings will support organisations in continuing to develop effective hybrid work arrangements,” says Caroline Corneliusson, doctoral student at the Department of Epidemiology and Global Health at Umeå University, and co-author of the study.

Why do our cells lose their ability to keep proteins in check as we age, and what happens when this system begins to fail? 🔬

Andreas Kohler, Assistant Professor at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics, is uncovering the quality control mechanisms inside mitochondria, research that could impact how we understand ageing and open new paths to preventing diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
