Our NUS College community came together for a Dinner Conversation with Dr Bernard Leong (Physics and Materials Science + TDP โ€™98) โ€“ Co-founder and CEO of Dorje AI, former Head of AI/ML for AWS in ASEAN, host of the Analyse Podcast and a Cambridge PhD holder in Physics.

He shared his life story, leading him across different fields and areas of knowledge, while keeping an entrepreneurial spirit, living a highly multidisciplinary life. He explained the importance of learning, yet always remembering to keep yourself unique.

The conversation ranged across AI, career and identity, but everyone left holding onto the same 12 words:

Learn from everyone.
Follow no one.
Observe the patterns.
Work like hell.

It was the perfect distillation of the evening's theme โ€” "The Privilege of a Lifetime is to be Yourself."

A heartfelt thanks to Dr Bernard Leong for his time and honesty, and to the students, faculty and staff who made the evening so memorable. Until the next one! ๐Ÿ’™

Our community gathered for an unforgettable evening at the Start-of-Semester Dinner, travelling across decades and dimensions under this iteration's Time Traveller theme. From vintage throwbacks to futuristic fits, the college grounds were buzzing with incredible energy, hearty food and dazzling student performances! โšก๏ธ

Here are some of the night's biggest highlights:
๐Ÿ‘— Time Traveller Fashion Show: Students owned the runway, serving iconic looks across the Best of the Era solo showcase, alongside coordinated Timeline Twins and multi-era Era Explorers duos!

๐ŸŽธ Live Band Sets & Buskers: The room came alive with music as our student bands and buskers delivered stellar sets, bringing the hype with everything from energetic rock and pop anthems to crowd-favorite mashups.

๐Ÿ’ƒ Dance Showcases: Bringing serious moves to the spotlight, our student dancers lit up the room with show-stopping covers of GIRLSET and Katseye!

Following our cohort's visit to Mihama Town earlier this summer as part of the Global Experience (GEx) programme, our students were thrilled to return the hospitality by welcoming 26 Mihama residents to our campus grounds for an afternoon of mutual exchange, laughter and community bonding. โœจ

The day kicked off on the court with a spirited, friendly game of Captainโ€™s Ball that quickly bridged language barriers through teamwork and sportsmanship. Continuing the exchange off the court, our students introduced their guests to a slice of local heritage, sharing laughs and testing their coordination over classic Singaporean childhood games like chapteh, five stones and pick up sticks. ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ

Beyond the bonding activities, this student-led hosting tradition continues to deepen the cross-border friendships forged between NUS College and Mihama Town. ๐Ÿค

This August, our students stepped out into the community for Community NOW! โ€” collaborating with local ground-up organisations, non-profits and community partners across four meaningful, hands-on initiatives:

๐ŸŒŠ Beach Clean Up: Taking environmental stewardship into their own hands, our student volunteers cleared coastal litter along the shorelines while learning more about native marine biodiversity and conservation.

๐ŸŽˆ National Day Games Facilitation with Rainbow Centre: Bringing high energy and the festive spirit to Rainbow Centre, our student volunteers facilitated interactive game booths for children and youth with disabilities to celebrate National Day.

๐Ÿง  "Memories That Matter" with Goodlife! Studio: Connecting generations on our campus grounds, students guided seniors through interactive Virtual Reality (VR) games and held heartfelt conversations with them to co-create personalised memorabilia.

๐Ÿ“ฆ Packing Party & Dialogue with Project X: Students assembled vital safety kits for community outreach while participating in insightful conversations with Project X staff and peer educators about social and health advocacy.

A massive thank you to our community partners and student volunteers who showed up with open hearts and ready hands! ๐Ÿ’™

Huge congratulations to University Scholars Programme alumni Shamantha Yan (Sociology + USP โ€™08) and Shane Yan (Psychology + USP โ€™08)! ๐ŸŽ‰ Their social enterprise, Growthbeans (), has been conferred Company of Good โ€“ 3 Hearts by the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre (NVPC) and we couldn't be prouder.

From a two-person team 12 years ago to a flourishing community, Shamantha and Shane have built something truly special โ€“ a space where people become more self-aware, genuinely connected and empowered to grow alongside one another.

This recognition is well-deserved and the NUS College family is cheering you on every step of the way. Keep growing, keep inspiring!

How do communities adapt, innovate, and thrive amidst rapid development and environmental change? ๐Ÿ‡ป๐Ÿ‡ณ

Our students journeyed through Vietnam as part of the Global Experience (GEx) programme โ€” from the bustling streets of Ho Chi Minh City to the waterways of Can Tho, the heritage towns of Sa Dec and Cao Lanh, and the borderlands of Chau Doc. ๐Ÿ‘ฃ

Leveraging an interdisciplinary lens combining social science and creative visual methods, the cohort was led by Dr Cheng Yi'En in exploring how everyday lives are organised around evolving spatial, cultural and natural landscapes:

๐Ÿ“ธ Visual Storytelling & Urban Life: In Ho Chi Minh City, students engaged in collaborative photovoice projects to capture personal narratives of student life, urban development, and rapid spatial transformation.

๐Ÿ›ถ Environmental Livelihoods & River Ecologies: Traveling through Can Tho and the delta, the group examined how riverine communities navigate environmental shifts, impacting agricultural patterns and climate resilience.

๐ŸŒพ Rural-Urban Transitions & Heritage: In D**g Thap (Sa Dec & Cao Lanh), students conducted field observations on local craft traditions, agricultural shifts and community adaptations to modern markets.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Cultural Identities & Borderland Communities: In Chau Doc, the cohort studied migration, cross-cultural coexistence and the rich tapestry of ethnic and cultural identities shaping life along the river border.

Through ethnographic field studies and photography, students developed a grounded appreciation for how local communities respond to the pressures of modernization while actively preserving their cultural roots. โœจ

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for our latest Rectorโ€™s Fireside Chat! ๐Ÿ›‹๏ธโœจ

We were deeply honoured to have Ambassador Chan Heng Chee join our Rector, Professor Cheong Koon Hean, for a truly insightful conversation on international relations and diplomacy. From first-hand experiences in the diplomatic service to Singaporeโ€™s unique role in navigating an increasingly complex global landscape, we hope the session gave everyone plenty of food for thought.

A heartfelt thank you to Ambassador Chan for generously sharing her wisdom and to Professor Cheong for hosting and continuing to champion this inspiring series. Most importantly, thank you to everyone in the room who showed up, asked brilliant questions and shaped the discussion! โค๏ธ

How do societies design not just for people, but with them in mind? ๐Ÿ’ญ

As part of NUS College's Global Experience (GEx) course, our students travelled across Nagoya, Sendai and Tokyo to explore human-centric design integrating various domains. ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต

Led by Dr Tan Da Yang, here are some highlights from the trip:

โš™๏ธ STATION Ai: The class dove into Nagoya's evolving startup ecosystem, examining how various stakeholders come together to co-create innovative solutons that address real-world challenges.

โ›‘๏ธ Visit to Ishinomaki: Engaging with local community partners, students studied the various recovery efforts that were implemented following the 2011 earthquake. They saw how grassroots initiatives and cultural spaces like Theatre Kinematica can unite communities in times of crisis.

๐Ÿค– LOVOT Museum: Students interacted with companion robots designed by Groove X, experiencing firsthand how deep learning and bio-mimetic design can simulate genuine companionship to tackle the modern loneliness epidemic.

From observational studies in the Osu Shopping District ๐Ÿฎ, experiencing the traditional Nihon Bunyo dance ๐Ÿชญ, to collaborating with Chuukyo University peers on a community revitalisation project ๐Ÿค, these experiences made for an unforgettable and immersive journey. โœจ

The NUS-Sciences Po DDP turned 10! Students and alumni โ€” over 50 strong since the programme started in 2016 โ€” came together at NUS College for a conference cm networking event.

Two panels got the conversation going:

๐ŸŽ“ "Graduate School: Yes, No, Maybe?" Zhou Xiaorui (History + USP '20), Sara Loo (History + USP '21) and Tan Jing Ling (Political Science + USP '22) covered scholarships, different career routes after graduation and what they'd tell current students.

โšกThe second panel delved into creating impact across diverse careers, featuring Jean-Philippe Hicke (Economics + USP โ€™18) and Veronike Ban (Political Science + USP โ€™21) from the private equity and industry and trade sectors, moderated by fellow alumna Jessie Lim (Political Science + USP โ€™20).

Everyone stuck around for a human library session and brunch, with conversations ranging from consulting and diplomacy to investments, entrepreneurship, and life in France and Singapore.
