The global economic order is shifting, and trade is emerging as a geopolitical battleground.

At a recent public lecture hosted by LKYSPP, Professor Dennis Novy, Chief Economist at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, and Dr Denis Hew, Senior Research Fellow at CAG, unpacked a critical new concept: 'Tariff Confusion'.

As Southeast Asia navigates this deeply contested trading environment, understanding these dynamics is a survival mechanism for businesses large and small.

Gliding across the water without a ripple out of place, our resident swan at the neighbouring Botanic Gardens makes it look effortless. What you don't see is the paddling beneath the surface.

A fitting reminder for anyone feeling overwhelmed this week: stay composed on the surface, keep pushing underneath. You’ve got this. 🦢

Washington has lowered Singapore's tariff rate from 12.5% to 10%, tied to concerns over goods made with forced labour. The question now is what should Singapore give up to keep it.

In a recent op-ed, Yong Pung How Professor Ramkishen S. Rajan of LKYSPP argues the answer is — not much. Singapore should address the forced-labour concern directly, he writes, but a modest reduction does not by itself justify a wider economic-security agreement of the kind Jordan struck with Washington.

His case rests on a principle worth protecting. For a trading hub, strategic flexibility is an economic interest, not only a foreign-policy one.

This op-ed was first published in The Straits Times.

China hosted APEC this year at an awkward moment for the region: trade tensions rising, supply chains fraying, and technology moving faster than the rules meant to govern it.

Recently, the Centre on Asia and Globalisation (CAG) at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy convened a panel to take stock. Moderated by Dr Denis Hew, it brought together Eduardo Pedrosa of the APEC Secretariat, Kaewkamol Pitakdumrongkit of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council, and CTI's Christopher Tan.

Their shared conclusion: APEC's real test is not the number of declarations it produces, but whether economies can turn shared concerns into action. In a forum with no enforcement mechanism, that comes down to trust, alignment, and the will to follow through.

In a time of deep uncertainty, trade, investment, technology, and supply chains are now strategic tools as much as economic ones. What does this mean for , and ?

Join Prof Dennis Novy, Chief Economist at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and Professor of Economics at the University of Warwick, as he explores how economic and geopolitical forces are becoming more intertwined.

Chaired by CAG Senior Research Fellow Dr Denis Hew, the lecture will introduce the concept of “tariff confusion” — the idea that uncertainty in trade policy can have significant economic consequences beyond the tariffs themselves.

Mark your calendars and don’t miss out on this conversation on 21 August 2026, 5:15 pm - 6:30 PM at LKYSPP!
