We are proud to announce that 3 prominent NUS scientists have been honoured at this year’s President’s Science and Technology Awards (organised by National Research Foundation Singapore) for their significant scientific contributions in their respective fields.

President of the Republic of Singapore, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, presented the President’s Science Award to Prof Wu Jishan for his pioneering work on molecular carbon science. He developed open-shell and topologically complex molecules that paved the way for advanced materials and quantum technologies.

Asst Prof Liu Boxiang and Asst Prof Hou Yi received the Young Scientist Award from Mr Heng Swee Keat, Chairman of National Research Foundation. Asst Prof Liu was recognised for building AI and bioinformatics methods that help identify disease-causing genes in Asian populations while Asst Prof Hou was lauded for creating next-generation solar technology with record-breaking performance.

We‘re off to another roaring start to the Staff & Student Engagement Events this year! Games Arvo saw a crowd of more than 60 staff and students battle it out over exciting games like Mario Party, Charades, The Singaporean Dream, Telepictionary and what’s that? A ”Guess Who?”but for Faculty?! Crazy that a Prof spent her evenings cutting and pasting faces for that game.... Anyway, does your Profs look like they would set difficult exam questions? If not, flip ‘em down! Don’t forget to join us for Footy and Captain‘s Ball on September 9th! ~ Dr Linda Hong

Games Arvo was full of good food and even better people!! I got the opportunity to play games like the drawing picture game and the guessing which Prof game with seniors, and Profs which made me realise how approachable they are. I also got closer to my TBL mates through these games while devouring delicious snacks and baked goods!!! ☺️☺️ ~ Y1 PHS student

𝗡𝗨𝗦 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗲: 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 – 𝗮𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲

A total of 37 undergraduate students and four faculty members from the 𝗛𝘂𝗮𝘇𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆, the 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗢𝘀𝗮𝗸𝗮 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 and 𝗧𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗷𝗶 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗲 visited the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences from 17 to 21 August 2026. It was an international mobility programme that brought the team to NUS’s Kent Ridge Campus.

During the five-day visit, the delegates visited laboratories, attended lectures, participated in a practical session, made a trip to a Guardian Health and Beauty store, had a glimpse of hospital pharmacy practice at the National University Hospital (NUH), and observed the state-of-the-art primary care facilities at the newly opened Tengah Polyclinic. A comprehensive programme spanning science, healthcare and culture was arranged for the delegates. 💊🧪🧬

Amid the packed schedule that was organised by NUS Professors Prof Paul Gallagher and A/Prof Chui Wai Keung, the delegates also had a chance to savour local hawker fare and visit tourist attractions. Students from the National University of Singapore Pharmaceutical Society (NUSPS) International Relations Committee guided the delegates around the Kent Ridge campus and through the streets of Singapore. It was a trip packed with fond memories for the delegates to take home. 😀👏

Decades of hard work, millions of memories, and one unforgettable evening at the 65th Pharmily Dinner & Dance! 😃🎉

On 14 August 2026, 177 students, staff, and alumni gathered to toast to 65 years of the NUS Pharmaceutical Society (NUSPS). Looking back at where we started versus where we are today, it’s amazing to see how much we’ve grown—not just as a department, but as a Pharmily.

From humble beginnings to recently winning the Best Global Professional Development Project Award 2025-2026 at the IPSF World Congress 2026, NUSPS has continually raised the bar for leadership, service, and academic excellence.

The evening was packed with incredible moments, including a trip down memory lane with a milestone video showcasing our 65th anniversary, unforgettable performances by our talented students and alumni, and a game show highlighting NUSPS history.

A huge thank you to all the students, staff, and alumni who joined us for dinner at Summer Garden Restaurant at SAFRA Mount Faber. Your presence has made this celebration truly memorable. Here’s to honouring our legacy, celebrating our present, and building an even brighter future together! 🥂

We are delighted to welcome Mr Clivia Yap, who joins our department as a Teaching Assistant.

Clivia brings with him eight years of experience as a community pharmacist at Watsons. Throughout his practice, he particularly enjoyed helping patients not only adhere to their medications but also develop a deeper understanding of the rationale behind their treatments, empowering them to take an active role in managing their health. He is passionate about nurturing these same skills in students and supporting them as they transition into professional practice.

Congratulations to 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐖𝐞𝐢 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐠 on receiving the 𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, representing the NUS Department of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. 🎉👏

Driven by a long-standing passion for peptide and protein engineering, Wei Meng's research in A/P Rachel Ee's lab led to the discovery of a first-of-its-kind peptide motif that self-assembles into unique nanonet structures capable of trapping bacteria. Building on this breakthrough, the team is now leveraging deep learning to identify new peptide motifs and nanonet morphologies with potential therapeutic applications.

This achievement reflects years of dedication, innovation, and collaboration, resulting not only in impactful scientific discoveries but also in patents and the creation of a spin-off company.

Congratulations once again to Wei Meng, A/P Ee, and the research team on this outstanding achievement in advancing pharmaceutical science. 🔬✨

Celebrating Assistant Professor Liu Boxiang on receiving the National Research Foundation (NRF) Fellowship (Class of 2026) for his project, “𝗕𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗢𝗻𝗲: 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮-𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗲-𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗳𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗿𝘂𝗴 𝗧𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘀”.

The NRF Fellowship brings together outstanding early-career researchers from all over the world to lead impactful, independent research in Singapore. It supports exceptional young scientists carrying out high-risk, high-reward research with the potential to drive transformative, real-world breakthroughs. By offering substantial funding over five years, the NRF Fellowship empowers the next generation of scientific leaders to push boundaries and deepen Singapore’s capabilities in science and technology.

Through this support, Dr Liu will combine genomic data science and machine learning to develop therapies that correct RNA-splicing errors linked to complex autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.
