Assoc Prof Edward Park recently visited Kyoto University’s Disaster Prevention Research Institute to share his research on sand mining, river instability and sustainable river management.

The visit strengthened his five-year collaboration with Professor Sameh Kantoush, which has led to 7+ joint publications and new opportunities for research, exchanges and fieldwork across Southeast Asia 🤝🌱

On 20 August 2026, the Humanities & Social Studies Education (HSSE) Department hosted Assoc Prof Yanyue Yuan, Associate Arts Professor of Interactive Media and Business at NYU Shanghai, for a Brown Bag session “Designing Learning Experiences That Connect: Experiential and Community-Engaged Course Design.”

Assoc Prof Yuan shared practical approaches to connecting students’ interests with their peers, communities and the wider world, fostering belonging, agency and deeper engagement in learning.

The session encouraged participants to consider how these approaches could be adapted across different disciplines and teaching contexts.

�🤖📚 AI is changing how we teach and learn — what does this mean for Chinese Language education?

At the 2026 Quadripartite Conference on 19 August, representatives from the NIE’s Asian Languages & Cultures (ALC) Department, MOE, Singapore Centre for Chinese Language (SCCL) and Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB) came together under the theme “Empowering the Future, Reimagining Pathways.”

The conference explored AI-supported Chinese Language teaching, meaningful learning and adaptive testing. Representing the NIE, Dr Wong Lung Hsiang shared on “When Learning Is No Longer ‘Difficult’: Bringing ‘Friction’ Back to Chinese Language Teaching in the AI Era.”

ALC colleagues exchanged perspectives with partners on the future of Chinese Language teaching and assessment in Singapore ✨

In a recent article by the South China Morning Post on how Singapore’s universities are responding to an AI-driven future, Prof Mutlu Cukurova, 18th C J Koh Professor in Education, shares his perspectives on the role of AI in learning. He highlights the importance of designing AI use to encourage students to think, question and critically evaluate its outputs, rather than simply relying on it for answers.

Prof Cukurova will explore these ideas further at his upcoming C J Koh Professorship in Education Public Lecture in Singapore.
