Established in 2005, the Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies (NUS Nursing) at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine is the only institution in Singapore to offer an undergraduate nursing programme for A-level holders and polytechnic graduate

s. It offers a range of academic nursing degree programmes from baccalaureate to doctoral levels. The NUS Nursing programme is leading in Asia and ranks among the best in the world. NUS Nursing’s principal mission is to nurture the next generation of transformational nurse leaders for clinical practice, education and research, to meet the dynamic challenges of the healthcare system. It will achieve this by providing quality evidence-based education within a student-centred learning environment, and through inter-professional education.

A historic milestone for NUS: Professor Lydia Lau has become the first faculty member in the University's history to be promoted to Full Professor on the Educator Track. 🎉

Since joining NUS Nursing in 2011, Prof Lydia has advanced healthcare education through the Longitudinal Patient Experience programme, the Entrustable Professional Activities (EPA) framework for Nursing, and the use of immersive virtual reality in healthcare education. Her work spans the education of students in Nursing, Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy.

Her impact extends across Singapore. As Co-Chair of the Ministry of Health's national RN-EPA workgroup, Prof Lydia led the implementation of a common EPA framework across Singapore's nursing institutions, strengthening how future nurses are trained and assessed. Internationally, she is the sole nursing representative on the International Competency-Based Health Professions Education Collaborators committee.

Her promotion recognises a career of turning educational scholarship into changes in how healthcare professionals learn—at NUS, across Singapore and internationally.

As Director of Student Affairs at NUS Nursing, Dr Fui Ping has been a dedicated mentor and champion for our students, creating opportunities for them to learn beyond the classroom—from engaging seniors and vulnerable communities to gaining valuable exposure overseas. Her commitment to nurturing capable, compassionate and socially responsible nurses has touched many students over the years.

It is our pleasure to welcome this year's incoming undergraduate cohort!🕯️

We were honoured to have Ms Margaret Lee, Chief Executive Officer of Alexandra Hospital, as our Guest of Honour. Having begun her own career as a nurse, her journey serves as an inspiring reminder of the many pathways a nursing education can lead to.

Marking a first for this year's inauguration ceremony, each student received a commemorative scarf, symbolising not only the beginning of their nursing career, but also to highlight the profession's values of compassion, resilience, and dedication.

Meet Ru Yan, one of our Master of Nursing Class of 2026 graduates, soon to begin her journey as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN).

For Ru Yan, returning to NUS Nursing for her Master's felt like coming full circle. "It was both nostalgic and rewarding to meet nursing lecturers who had taught me during my undergraduate years and to reconnect with the familiar campus environment," she shares.

Becoming an APN has been her career aspiration since her undergraduate days, and after 11 years in the General Surgery ward, that goal has taken clear shape. "While I found bedside nursing incredibly meaningful, I also wanted to broaden my scope of practice and make a greater impact on patient care," she explains. "Becoming an APN allows me to combine my clinical experience with advanced assessment, decision-making, and evidence-based practice."

She'll begin her one-year APN internship this August in acute care surgery and trauma, aiming to deepen her clinical expertise and sharpen her critical thinking as she prepares to step fully into the role.

After graduating with a diploma in Pharmaceutical Science, Ian knew he wanted a career rooted in human touch and care. He pursued a four-year Nursing undergraduate programme while balancing a demanding double major in Psychology. One of our top-performing graduates, Ian was awarded the Thio Kok Foe and Choo Kim Beng Prize in Nursing.

At NUS, Ian shaped his journey around combining clinical care with an understanding of how patients think and feel, believing that good care means looking after both the body and the mind. As Project Director of Project Iris, Ian led activities for children with cancer and their families, creating moments of joy beyond the hospital setting.

Ian's belief in holistic care was further strengthened during his clinical attachment at Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital. Caring for elderly, bedbound patients with limited opportunities for physical interaction or social engagement, he applied palliative care approaches through the Namaste Care Programme and spent time talking with patients and their families—learning that compassion and presence can be as important as clinical interventions in nursing.

Ian will begin his career as a pediatric nurse at KK Women's and Children's Hospital, where he hopes to combine psychological insight with clinical expertise to deliver truly patient-centred care.

Meet Maisarah, one of our NUS Nursing Class of 2026 graduates and winner of the NUS Achievement Award for Arts Production of the Year.

Together with NUS Ilsa Tari and her external interest group Rumah Rima, Maisarah co-created Ku Kelek Ku Dukung—a production weaving together Malay Dance and Pantun to challenge the audience's thinking of "tradition" vs "modernity", tracing Malay customs from birth to death. "We poured our heart and soul into this production," she shares, "to bring Pantun, an art form I hold dearly, onto the big stage."

That same instinct to carry and hold space for others is what drew her to nursing. "I chose nursing because I wanted to be there for people in their most vulnerable moments," she says. "Nursing is a gateway for me to offer comfort and strength to those who may need it."

At NUS, Maisarah didn't just carry her craft—she carried curiosity too, picking up Spanish and Arabic, pushing past old sports injuries to learn Silat, and building friendships that made her NUS experience especially meaningful.

Looking ahead, she hopes to keep carrying that same spirit forward—caring for patients, shaping the next generation of nurses, and living without limits.

To her family, educators, and friends: "All my achievements are a product of your love and encouragement. I would not have reached where I am today without you."

For Joel Nai, giving back has never been a stretch. As a child, his late grandmother instilled in him one guiding principle: 做好人 (be a good person). His parents later deepened that foundation by introducing him to charity work from a young age, shaping the values he'd carry into uni life and beyond.

Since 2022, Joel has made it an annual tradition to organise a major charity initiative around his birthday. Over the years, that's meant fundraising breakfasts for low-income households, care packs for children at KK Women's and Children's Hospital, and Household Blessings, a long-term independent charity initiative he set up to deliver essential household items to vulnerable families. This year's drive was deeply personal. After his family dog, Coco, passed away after 10 years by his side, Joel dedicated his fundraiser to rescued animals—donating supplies to SPCA, Action for Singapore Dogs, and Causes for Animals Singapore.

Alongside his Nursing major, he pursued a minor in Public Health. "Nursing enables me to care for patients at an individual level," he shares, "while Public Health gives me a broader perspective on the factors that shape health outcomes across communities."

As he begins his nursing journey in Changi General Hospital, Joel hopes to show others that making a difference doesn't require extraordinary resources. "Everyone has something to offer. Use your skills to give back, and know that you too can make a difference."

The experiences and dreams that shape us often begin in childhood.

For Brian Ang, it was a lifelong dream of working in healthcare that didn’t fade even after a successful 25-year career as an actuary. For Hafiz Maruf Akbar, it was a childhood experience during the 2004 tsunami that set him on a path towards international affairs. Though their journeys unfolded differently, both ultimately chose careers that reflected the passions and convictions they had carried with them for years.

As we celebrate the Class of , Brian and Hafiz's stories remind us that learning has no deadline, and that courage, resilience and purpose can lead to meaningful new beginnings at any stage of life. More than a celebration of their achievements, their journeys embody the spirit of lifelong learning at NUS and the many ways our graduates are making a difference by staying true to what matters most to them.
