💡🔬 A brighter way to monitor : and SMART - Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology researchers have developed a nano-sized sensor that can detect a key gut health ⚡️ in just 30 minutes.

The new sensor lights up when indole-3-propionic acid (IPA) is present. IPA is produced by gut bacteria when they break down tryptophan, an amino acid found in food, and has been linked to conditions such as , type 2 and . Current detection methods require specialised laboratory equipment such as mass spectrometry, which is costly and time-consuming, making it less suitable for routine checks or rapid testing.

Tested on 125 human plasma samples, the could pave the way for faster, more accessible and personalised gut health monitoring in the future.

Through the 💚🏙️ "Can You SustainaCity?" , and sustainable development concepts are transformed into a hands-on learning experience across several secondary schools in Singapore. It is designed by secondary school teachers Alvina Chua, Goh Tiong Ann, Ian Mui and Tiffany Loh in consultation with National Institute of Education (NIE) Singapore's Sustainability Learning Lab Co-Chair Dr Tricia Seow.

During the game, players step into the roles of key stakeholders such as the government, developer and dweller, negotiating trade-offs and collaborating to shape a while balancing social, economic and environmental needs.

The board game has been trialled in schools and refined through multiple iterations to strike a balance between educational rigour and enjoyable gameplay. “The game helps learners engage with complex urban geography and sustainable development issues in a tangible and accessible way, making concepts such as land-use planning, resource allocation and stakeholder interests easier to understand. We sought to represent the complexity of real-world sustainability issues without overwhelming players, while ensuring that learning was embedded naturally within engaging game mechanics,” shared Dr Seow.

💡💚Unwrapping a solution to : It's time to chomp down on one of 's toughest challenges.

The wrappers around our favourite 🍬 sweets, snacks and 🍜 instant noodles are made from multiple layers of plastic that are tightly bonded together, making them notoriously difficult to recycle. Current methods often require large amounts of chemical solvents to separate these materials.

researchers have developed a ♻️ cleaner and more cost-effective way to recycle such mixed plastic packaging without using harmful chemical solvents. The method selectively breaks down one type of plastic while leaving the others intact, allowing each material to be separated and recovered for reuse.

The recycled retain their quality and strength, making them suitable for new applications while helping to cut down on waste sent to landfills.

⚕️🤖🪡 Operating at a whole new scale: Imagine future surgeries performed by smaller than a seed.

Developed by scientists, this 4.4 mm-long can wirelessly carry out five surgical tasks – cutting tissue, releasing drugs, gripping and storing samples, generating heat for hyperthermic treatments, and navigating soft and uneven surfaces inside the body. Currently, most magnetic robots like this can perform only one or two functions.

Guided using magnetic fields, the can switch between functions in under a second. This could pave the way for more targeted and minimally invasive treatments, giving doctors finer control while reducing discomfort for patients.

and are changing Southeast Asia fast. Are professionals keeping up?

Nont Ratthaphong Woraphaithun, Country Head of Nielsen Thailand, and Giang Nguyen, Nanyang Biologics Group CTO, believe businesses can no longer afford a wait-and-see approach. From AI transforming how companies operate to biotech innovation accelerating across the region, both say professionals need to adapt quickly to stay competitive.

Their insights are featured ahead of the NTU Alumni Regional Conference in Bangkok on 11 July, where they will join fellow alumni and industry experts to discuss the future of Southeast Asia’s innovation economy.

This year’s conference will introduce faculty masterclasses for the first time, including one by alumnus Ian Yong Hoe Tan lecturer at Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, on AI and the future of intelligent workplaces. A keynote address by H.E. Ms Catherine Wong, Ambassador of the Republic of Singapore to Thailand will also be part of the programme.

Today is . Did you know that the campus is a treasure trove of ? 🕊️🌿

From the 🐦 Blue-crowned Hanging Parrot to the 🦋 Knight butterfly and many more, students recorded over 120 species living across the University’s grounds in this year’s Campus Nature Survey.

Organised by Earthlink NTU’s Nature Guiding Committee and supported by NTU Student Affairs, this annual citizen science initiative brings together the community to explore, observe, and document the rich variety of plant and animal life on campus.

This year, the survey coverage was expanded to new areas, and participants new to biodiversity surveying were introduced to the iNaturalist app to identify species, contributing valuable data to ongoing science and conservation efforts. One standout encounter was with the juvenile ant mantis, offering a fascinating glimpse into camouflage and survival strategies in nature.

Beyond the discoveries, surveyors shared that the experience deepened their appreciation for all around us.
