Congratulations to Asst Prof Mike Shou, named a 2026 Asian Young Scientist Fellow, one of 12 early-career researchers selected across Asia this year.

The Fellowship recognises his work in multimodal video intelligence. His group, Show Lab, builds AI that can understand and generate video, and is now working on systems that can act on what they see, from operating a computer to guiding a robot in a hospital or lab.

“I’m very honoured to be named an AYS Fellow, which is truly a recognition of our research on video AI, the efforts of my students and collaborators, and the strong support from NUS. With this fellowship, I look forward to advancing our research on Video-Language-Action agents and Video World Models – shifting video AI from passive observer into active agent, such as digital agent for computer use and robotic agent for healthcare and scientific discovery,” Asst Prof Shou said.

🌟 Two of our own were honoured at the NUS University Awards 2026, which recognised nine outstanding individuals this year for their achievements and contributions in education, research, mentorship and service to the University, Singapore and the global community. The annual awards honour educators, researchers and professionals for exceptional contributions.

🔹 Professor Bernard Tan Cheng Yian, Senior Vice Provost (Undergraduate Education) and Shaw Senior Professor with the Department of Information Systems and Analytics received the Outstanding Service Award for 17 years of leadership in the Office of the Provost, including his role chairing the University Committee on Educational Policy and driving curriculum reforms across nearly every college and school at NUS.

🔹 Professor Abhik Roychoudhury, Provost's Chair Professor with the Department of Computer Science, received the University Research Recognition Award for two decades of work in software testing and automated program repair. His research gave rise to AutoCodeRover, later acquired by SonarSource and now running inside SonarQube, and underpins tools used industry-wide today, including AFL++ and Google's OSS-Fuzz.

When CS undergraduates Aishwarya Goyal, Hazel Low, Abhishek Paranjape, and Andrew Soon started building AHMA at a hackathon last year, they kept coming back to one observation: Singapore has plenty of support for caregivers, but most caregivers have no idea where to find it.

🗣️ AHMA is a voice-first app that a caregiver can talk to about a hard week. It responds with encouragement and points them to community organisations and social service agencies. It also drafts emails to those organisations and adds appointments and medication reminders to Google Calendar. Voice came first because many caregivers are older adults who would rather speak than type. English, Malay and Mandarin work now, with dialects next on the list. The text-to-speech model was trained on Aishwarya's voice so it sounds like someone from here.

The team has been testing the prototype with caregivers at Mindfull Community and reworking features around what they hear. Hazel told The Straits Times that co-creating with caregivers is a core value for the team.

They're aiming to launch a working version in the coming months.

From ultra-low-power chips to AI-powered accessibility tech, the work of our own Provost's Chair Professor Li-Shiuan Peh and Associate Professor Suranga Nanayakkara was recognised by Minister Desmond Lee, as NRF released its RIE2025 Report.

NUS Computing is proud to be the place where work like this happens.

This morning, NRF released the RIE2025 Report.

New discoveries and breakthroughs often take the spotlight when we talk about research and innovation, but even more important are the people who turn ideas into impact.

Peh Li-Shiuan returned to Singapore through the Returning Singaporean Scientists Scheme after serving as Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT. Now back at her alma mater NUS, she is developing ultra-low-power chips for wearables, including “AI-on-skin” systems for health monitoring and sports coaching.

NTU PhD student Muhammad Naeem Bin Muhammad Nazri has completed an A*STAR research attachment. He is now exploring how lithium — a critical material for batteries — can be extracted from seawater.

Suranga Nanayakkara joined NUS after stints at MIT and the University of Auckland. At NUS, he directs the Centre for Holistic Inquiry into Lifelong Learning (CHILL) and founded AiSee, a start-up under Singapore's Enabling Masterplan 2030. Its AI-powered device helps persons with visual impairment "see" the world around them through real-time audio guidance.

We will continue investing in our research talents under RIE2030, empowering our researchers to push boundaries, create impact and take Singapore forward as a knowledge-based economy.

👏 Congratulations to Provost's Chair Professor Abhik Roychoudhury, named one of 80 inaugural members of the ACM SIGSOFT Software Engineering Academy, honouring lasting contributions to software engineering research, practice and education.

Prof Roychoudhury has led research on program repair since 2013, work that grew into AutoCodeRover and was later acquired by Sonar. He's also Editor-in-Chief of ACM TOSEM and a 2024 ACM Fellow.

Three papers co-authored by Professor Xiaokui Xiao have won top honours at leading international conferences this year, spanning AI efficiency, privacy auditing, and graph algorithms.

🔹ACM SIGKDD 2026: Best Student Paper Award
PhD candidate Yiqian Huang, together with Prof Xiao and co-authors, won for SCOPE, a method for selecting cost-efficient LLM combinations in multi-step AI systems, cutting costs by up to six times without sacrificing quality.

🔹IEEE S&P 2026: Distinguished Paper Award
Rishav Chourasia and Ergute Bao, both former PhD students of Prof Xiao's, led a team with Prof Xiao auditing Apple's differential privacy framework, used on more than 2.35 billion devices. They found several mechanisms fell short of their privacy guarantees, including secure-aggregation protocols with local privacy protection switched off. The team disclosed the vulnerabilities to Apple, which has since deprecated the affected mechanisms.

🔹ACM PODS 2026: Best Newcomer Award
Xinpeng Jiang, Haoyu Liu, and Siqiang Luo of NTU, together with Prof Xiao, won for closing a long-standing gap in the theory behind personalised PageRank.

And that’s a wrap on the NUS Computing Career Fair August 2026! 💼✨

For two days, COM3’s Multi-Purpose Hall was buzzing with conversations as our students met employers from across tech, finance, cybersecurity and government.

One of the best parts of the Career Fair is seeing our students connect with employers face to face. From asking about internships and graduate roles to learning more about different career paths, there were plenty of conversations happening throughout the two days.

A big thank you to all our participating employers for taking the time to be here, and to every student who came by, asked questions, introduced themselves and took the opportunity to explore what’s next. ❤️

We hope many of the conversations and connections made over the past two days lead to exciting opportunities ahead.

Big congratulations to Associate Professor Ilya Sergey and his team at NUS School of Computing, whose paper on Velvet won the CAV 2026 Distinguished Paper Award, one of just eight out of 81 accepted papers at this year's conference.

Velvet helps developers prove their code does exactly what it's supposed to do, built on the Lean proof assistant used by mathematicians and AI researchers alike.

Well done to lead author Vladimir Gladshtein and the whole research team.
