What inspires someone to dedicate their career to batteries?

For Assistant Professor Weiran Zhang, the answer lies in the possibility of creating technologies that can help solve some of society’s biggest challenges — from clean energy and sustainable transportation to future intelligent systems.

After conducting research on advanced battery technologies at the University of Maryland, Dr. Zhang joined NTU EEE to explore how advances in electrochemistry, materials science, and engineering can create safer and more powerful energy storage technologies.

Today, he leads the Electrochemical Interfaces and Ionics (EI²) Group, where he is researching next-generation solid-state batteries and new approaches to energy storage.

His vision is simple but ambitious: to help develop the batteries that will power the future.
When he's not in the laboratory, Dr. Zhang enjoys basketball, billiards, travelling, and exploring coffee shops around the world.

🌍✨ Five students recently headed to Beijing for the Tsinghua EE 2026 Summer School! 🇨🇳⚡

Hosted by Tsinghua University, the fully funded programme brought together students from around the world to explore AI+ for Urban Sustainability through expert talks, industry visits and hands-on team challenges. 🌱🤖

Beyond the tech, they also experienced Beijing’s culture through visits to the Great Wall and Forbidden City, returning with fresh perspectives, new friendships and plenty of memorable moments. ✨

🎓 Connecting, sharing and starting the journey together! ✨

Our Master of Science (MSc) students under the Global Excellence and Diversity Scholarship (GEDS) and Postgraduate Teaching Assistant Scheme (PTAS) gathered at last week for a lively dialogue session.

Through icebreakers and an introduction to the programme, students had the opportunity to meet their peers, get to know one another and learn more about the programme.

🇱🇦 Better Lao Than Never! 💙❤️

A team of 28 students from Overseas Community Involvement Project (OCIP) and NTU Animal Lovers’ Society (ALS) recently spent two meaningful weeks in Laos, working together to refurbish classrooms at Dondeng Primary School and create a better learning environment for its children. 🏫✨

Beyond the refurbishment work, the experience also challenged the team to step outside their comfort zones, from cooking their own meals and going without Wi-Fi to adapting to a different way of daily life.

Coming from different communities, the students were united by one shared purpose: to give back, contribute wherever they could and make a meaningful difference. 🤝

Two weeks in Laos, one shared mission, and plenty of lessons and memories to bring home.

🏆 Congratulations to Nanyang Assistant Professor Zhang Weiran, one of our young faculty members at , on receiving the 2026 ISE-Elsevier Prize for Applied Electrochemistry.

Presented by the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE), the ISE-Elsevier Prize for Applied Electrochemistry recognises young scientists for achievements in the field of applied electrochemistry.

Asst Prof Zhang received the prize in recognition of his original contributions towards addressing key limitations in advanced battery technologies, including solid-state battery operation at low pressure and near-room temperature, dendrite formation, and calendar ageing.

Reflecting on the achievement, Asst Prof Zhang shared:

“I am deeply honored to join the ranks of past recipients who have contributed to advancing applied electrochemistry. To me, this award is not only a recognition of my own work, but also a recognition of the broader efforts to advance solid-state batteries as a promising platform for next-generation energy technologies.

This recognition further motivates me to explore the fundamental role of electrochemistry in understanding and advancing future battery and energy technologies.”

The award reflects Asst Prof Zhang’s research contributions and the achievements of our young faculty at NTU EEE.
