We are proud to share that the University of the Arts Singapore (UAS) is participating in Artfield Nanhai Guangdong 2026 in Foshan, China! This marks a historic milestone for UAS as our first overseas residency collaboration with HUBART, and as the only overseas arts university for the showcase.

To bring this international showcase to life, students from LASALLE College of the Arts and NAFA spent a month living, listening, and creating on Pingsha Island. Immersed in local life, they allowed the island's rhythms to guide their creative practices, from daily ferry schedules and seasonal flood cycles to conversations with local farmers and fishermen, all of which shaped their final works.

Responding to the festivalโ€™s core theme, Water Connects, they translated these cross-cultural connections into site-responsive installations, tactile ceramics, moving images, and mixed media works. Their works will be presented alongside those from over 30 countries and regions at one of the area's leading contemporary art festival, showcasing the creativity of Singaporeโ€™s next generation of artists.

Join us in celebrating the students' journey:
๐ŸŽจ Angel Woo & Eunice Lim - BA (Hons) Fine Arts, LASALLE College of the Arts, University of the Arts Singapore
๐ŸŽจ Matthew Goh & Hans Chew - Master of Fine Arts, Fine Art, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, University of the Arts Singapore

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Artfield Nanhai Guangdong 2026 runs from 17 July 2026 to 3 January 2027.

What does Singapore sound like to a young composer? ๐ŸŽถ

The inaugural Mapletree Young Composers Initiative Performance & Award Ceremony brought together six student composers from LASALLE College of the Arts and NAFA, each presenting an original work inspired by the theme Essence of Singapore.

Selected from 20 submissions, the awardees developed their compositions through faculty mentorship before sharing their work with a live audience. Made possible through a collaboration with Mapletree (Mapletree Arts in the City) as part of its SG60 commemorations, the initiative provided meaningful opportunities for these emerging composers to develop their musical identity through mentorship, live performance and real-world experience.

University of the Arts Singapore (UAS), LASALLE College of the Arts (LASALLE) and Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) Commencement 2026

The inaugural joint Commencement marked a historic milestone in Singapore's arts education, with graduates from LASALLE and NAFA celebrating their achievements together as part of Singapore's first university of the arts.

Graced by Guest of Honour Mr Desmond Lee, Minister for Education and Minister-in-Charge of Social Services Integration, the Commencement saw undergraduates receive degrees conferred by UAS for the first time. The celebrations with graduates, families, friends and mentors continued at the University of the Arts Singapore, LASALLE BA (Hons) and NAFA Convocation ceremonies.

The pioneer cohort of graduates has helped shape the Universityโ€™s identity and culture. Now, they take with them a strong foundation in their disciplines, together with adaptability and human judgement, to shape Singapore's creative landscape, enrich lives and contribute meaningfully to a rapidly changing world.

Congratulations, Class of 2026! Keep creating, connecting and contributing as you shape what comes next through the arts. โœจ

: Kathryn Shannon Sim, BA (Hons) Fashion Media and Industries Programme Leader was interviewed by Lianhe Zaobao ่”ๅˆๆ—ฉๆŠฅ as part of a series investigating how AI is transforming the way we work.

Pointing to UNESCOโ€™s โ€˜Re|Shaping Policies for Creativityโ€™ publication about how generative AI will significantly disempower millions of artists, writers and musicians, Shannon emphasises that cultural policy must focus on deliberately upholding subjectivity to avoid unconsciously "outsourcing" the thinking and exploration that gives soul to creative work.

Ultimately, she says, the continued pull of human-made arts and arts culture will be its inherent je ne sais quois: โ€œNot craftsmanship defined by manual ex*****on alone, but by the uniquely human capacity to exercise judgement, imagination and cultural insight in ways that technology cannot replicate.โ€

In the absence of adequate institutional recognition and preservation, Southeast Asian women artists and their advocates have developed alternative infrastructures of memory that include artist collectives, oral histories, living archives, collecting practice and educational networks to preserve and transit marginalised histories. Although there is evidence of improvement in the recognition and contribution by contemporary women artists to Southeast Asian art histories with more group and solo exhibitions included in both institutional and gallery programming there is still an urgent need to ensure that women artists do not remain unseen, unheard and unacknowledged in the region.

Informal quantitative research within a group of Singapore and Malaysian art galleries for instance, indicate that representation and inclusion of women artists is only 1/3 that of male artists. Lyon concluded her 2020 MA thesis about womenโ€™s art collectives in Southeast Asia by exhorting a new generation of art historians to continue investigating other strategies used by women artists to navigate the lingering patriarchy that still exists in the contemporary artworld where male artists are disproportionately represented in institutions, galleries and collections.

Lyon's focus had been the collective format as demonstrated by the transnational collective, Womanifesto based in Thailand and the local Filipino collective, ๐พ๐‘Ž๐‘ ๐‘–๐‘๐‘ข๐‘™๐‘Ž๐‘›. The interview transcripts in her thesis about the collectivesโ€™ respective journeys provide oral histories (made more poignant by the recent passing of prominent Filipino artist and educator Brenda Fajardo) that are strong examples of these alternative feminist infrastructures for women and other marginalised groups who continue to struggle for recognition and acknowledgment.

At the Arts Electronica Campus Exhibition, visitors will be able to explore a virtual archipelago of 60 story-boats, which share Singapore stories of movement, migration and belonging.

In an interview with Susan Ng at CNA938 last weekend, Dr Natalia talks about the archival and transformative medium of VR memory-embodying and how the project has been integral to teaching students about creative leadership, as well as shouts out the original student team who worked with Ben on the evolution of the project: Lionel Fong, Fildzah Sazali, Angela Rustham and Amila Khairana.

Ben and Dr Natalia, along with current Arts Management students Haris Bin Muhammad Shahril, Vina Tan, Shernice Sah and Angela and Amila, will head off to the Festival very soonโ€”so keep an eye on our socials for the teamโ€™s adventures in Linz!

Led by Senior Fellow Professor Milenko Prvaฤki over two weeks, students undertake workshops and field trips in Singapore exploring various aspects of history, geography, culture and aesthetics.

As the showcase comes to a close this Saturday evening, we look back on how the roots of โ€˜terraโ€™ run deep as both artistic prompt and through the bonds the participants have forged.
