🔬 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗳𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿

For Jared Chan, his final year at NUS is about turning years of study into the next chapter of his journey in physics.

With a keen interest in quantum physics and optics, Jared is using his final year to deepen his knowledge through his Final Year Project (FYP). The 𝗟𝗼𝘂𝗶𝘀 𝗛𝗼𝗻 𝗬𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗲𝗻 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 eases some of his financial commitments, giving him greater freedom to focus on his studies and research.

His learning journey extends beyond the classroom. A student exchange programme in his third year gave him exposure to a different learning environment, broadening his intellectual and cultural horizons. “I have greater confidence in pursuing academic and professional opportunities with the scholarship,” he says.

For Jared, the scholarship is more than financial support. It is recognition of his academic efforts and encouragement to keep learning, growing and making the most of every opportunity.

Looking ahead, he hopes to apply his physics knowledge to make meaningful contributions, whether in research or industry.

The scholarship was made possible by the 𝗟𝗼𝘂𝗶𝘀 𝗛𝗼𝗻 𝗬𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗲𝗻 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱, established in 2000 to honour the late Mr Louis Hon Yung Sen, one of NUS Physics’ pioneers. The scholarship is awarded to outstanding Physics students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership and community involvement.

When it comes to skincare, effective treatments do not appear overnight – and they’re rarely one-size-fits-all solutions.

🧪 For Jasmine Kang, founder of Skinlycious and National University of Singapore, Faculty of Science Life Sciences alumna, skincare is rooted in scientific curiosity, relentless experimentation and lived experience.

After struggling with acne-prone skin and trying countless products without success, Jasmine decided to take matters into her own hands - drawing on her biomedical and pharmaceutical industry experience to develop her own skincare solutions.

🔬 From running "half-face experiments" on her own sensitive skin to conducting clinical trials with customers, she applied the same scientific rigour she learned in her studies to develop and launch her own products.

“Science taught me how to think critically and design experiments,” she says. “Today, I still apply the same mindset when developing products.”

🇸🇬 Building Skinlycious was far from a smooth journey. The brand took years to become what it is today, growing through manufacturing challenges, reformulations and hard-earned lessons from trial and error.

“Fail fast, fail forward,” says Jasmine. “If you fail, make sure you learn something from it.”

Backed by science and proven by real results, Jasmine is now delivering skincare solutions and education designed to make clear skin more accessible.

🐄 Cattle waste → biogas → hydrogen fuel. This was one of the unlikely lessons in modern agriculture awaiting National University of Singapore, College of Humanities and Sciences Life Sciences students Lim Khai Ian and Darren Tok at Hokkaido's Shikaoi Environmental Preservation Center.

The SP2201 Agri-Science Summer Programme in Hokkaido was also a journey that went beyond agriculture – they planted rice, tried traditional indigo dyeing and watched the food produce auction at Sapporo Central Wholesale Market, where, as Darren observed, "food is a matter of community pride."

Between drone-assisted farms and driverless tractors, and a canal-town getaway along the way, they discovered something more than the blend of tradition and innovation - they discovered independence, personal growth and friendships.

“By travelling alone to Japan and navigating new surroundings, I become more willing to step beyond my comfort zone,” says Ian 🌏

💼 Ever received a job offer and wondered if the salary is fair?

💡 For National University of Singapore, Faculty of Science's Data Science and Analytics alumnus Luqman Naqib, that question during his own job search was the spark behind Lowball: a salary-benchmarking tool designed to address a wider challenge: the lack of salary transparency.

“I wanted to create a tool that made the information easier to access, more useful and less dependent on hearsay,” he says.

Drawing on his background in DSA and past internships, he leveraged his technical knowledge to understand how semantic representations could strengthen search and similarity-based matching in Lowball - helping users identify roles with comparable responsibilities grounded on job descriptions.

“My hope is that the tool helps democratise access to salary information,” Luqman adds.

Prof Wu Jishan (NUS Department of Chemistry) for pioneering new ways to control carbon-based molecules, opening doors for next-gen electronics, photonics, and quantum technologies.

42 million hectares. 🌳

That’s how much natural forest remains within agricultural and logging concessions across Southeast Asia - an area larger than Malaysia.

For Life Sciences’ alumnus Annabel Lim, now doing her PhD at
NUS Centre for Nature-based Climate Solutions, this finding from her research points to new opportunities to protect forests within concession landscapes.

But making that happen means embracing an interdisciplinary approach - bringing ecology, economics, governance, green finance and communities together.

It is this intersection of disciplines, people and possibilities that drives the kind of questions that can translate science into meaningful policy and practice.

“Knowing that our work contributes to safeguarding forests makes the long process worthwhile,” she says.

🎉 And just like that, we wrap up Science Orientation with a night to remember!

The finale event, Science Bash, celebrated the incredible talents, personalities and journeys of our incoming Science freshmen 🧪💫

💃 Beyond the high-energy performances and confident catwalks, it brought together freshmen, seniors, alumni and faculty for a night of laughter, cheer and camaraderie - a fitting tribute to the people who make the Faculty of Science a community 💙

“I have learnt so much from others and I am super glad to have made lifelong friendships! Bash was a once in a lifetime experience and it's safe to say that I have no regrets!” says Life Sciences freshman Pierre.
