A wonderful day at NTU Homecoming, welcoming alumni back to campus and reconnecting with familiar faces across the NTU community.

At the SSS booth, we had the chance to catch up with our alumni, hear where life has taken them since graduation, and capture some lovely moments together through photos and videos.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by, said hello, shared a story, or simply spent a little time with us.

Homecoming is always a special reminder that while campus life moves on, the connections built here continue long after graduation. 💛

Think a smart city is all about technology? Think again.

At the recent Chua Thian Poh Fireside Chat on Smart Cities, 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿 𝗡𝘂𝗿𝘂𝗹 𝗔𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗶𝗻 from NTU’s School of Social Sciences Sociology Programme joined Ms Tan Lee Chew, Group Chief Commercial Officer (Market Development) and President, Smart City & Digital Solutions at ST Engineering, for a thought-provoking conversation on how technology and AI are changing the way we live and what these changes mean for people.

Because a city can be technologically advanced …. but does that necessarily make it smarter?

From loneliness and community ties to trust in AI, human judgement and accountability, the conversation explored the social questions behind our increasingly connected cities.

On 28 August, CoHASS students and alumni visited GovTech for an alumni sharing and career exploration session, co-hosted by the NTU SSS Alumni Association and SSS Alumnus Bryan Michael Chiew.

During the visit, participants had the opportunity to learn more about GovTech and hear directly from NTU alumni working across different roles in the organisation.

We would like to thank Bryan, Yun Rong, Dorcas, Jia Eenn and Faith for taking the time to share their career journeys, experiences and insights with our students and alumni.

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐒𝐒𝐒 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐬 | 𝐀𝐥𝐮𝐦𝐧𝐢 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 — 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐋𝐢𝐦 𝐗𝐮𝐚𝐧 𝐊𝐞

From Sociology at SSS to supporting others through counselling, Julian’s journey is grounded in empathy, curiosity and meaningful human connection.

A Class of 2020 Sociology alumnus, Julian is currently a Counsellor / Manager at the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) and also serves as Vice-President (Sociology) of the SSS Alumni Association, 4th EXCO.
Looking back on his time at SSS, Julian shares how learning Sociology and developing the sociological imagination shaped his counselling journey — helping him understand personal struggles within broader social systems and connect with others with greater empathy.

His SSS experience continues to inspire him to give back to the community. Through volunteering and alumni engagement, Julian hopes to contribute to a supportive space where alumni can stay connected, share their experiences, and offer mentorship and guidance to younger graduates navigating their own journeys.

His advice to those still figuring out what comes next?
“𝙀𝙢𝙗𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙚 𝙪𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙮, 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙮 𝙘𝙪𝙧𝙞𝙤𝙪𝙨, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙚𝙣𝙟𝙤𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙟𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙚𝙮!”

Why are internships made mandatory in your SSS journey?

Because sometimes, the best way to understand what you want to do is to actually step into the world of work.

For Year 3 Psychology student 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐚 𝐆𝐚𝐧 𝐘𝐮 𝐗𝐮𝐚𝐧, that meant spending three months with the Ministry of Home Affairs’ Home Team Psychology Division.

From applying psychology concepts to practical policy recommendations to exploring crisis work, 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐚’s internship gave her a chance to see her field beyond the classroom ... and helped her leave with a clearer vision of the path she wants to pursue.

And sometimes, that’s what an internship is really about: not just adding something to your CV, but finding out what makes you want to keep going.
