On 21 August 2026, NUS Law students gathered at the Cendana Field for this year’s Block B Party, marking the beginning of a new academic year and a new chapter for our community.
An exciting line-up of student performances, a vibrant Maker’s Market, carnival activities and photo booths created the perfect opportunity for students to mingle and create new memories together.

The Block B Party is a longstanding annual tradition that brings students together to reconnect, welcome new faces and celebrate the year ahead. This year’s celebration was especially meaningful as it marked the first Block B Party since NUS Law’s move from the
Bukit Timah campus to Kent Ridge. While the venue has changed, the name remains as a reminder of the collegial spirit that has always defined the NUS Law community.

Continuing the annual tradition that began in 2012, members of the NUS Law faculty met with members of the Supreme Court Bench over lunch on 26 August.

The luncheon provided an opportunity for the judiciary and our faculty to reconnect and exchange views on legal education and broader developments in Singapore’s legal landscape.

We are grateful for this longstanding relationship and the opportunities it creates for meaningful dialogue between the judiciary and academia, grounded in a shared commitment to legal excellence and to nurturing the next generation of legal professionals.

NUS Law is proud to celebrate the launch of Professor Kumaralingam Amirthalingam’s latest book, Medical Negligence and the Duty to Advise: Beyond Autonomy.

This book takes the conversation beyond patient autonomy – which focuses on the rights of the patient, to agency and shared decision-making – which focus on the relationship between doctor and patient.

At the book launch at NUS Law last week, Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon reflected on the development of the law on the duty to advise, referring to the leading Singapore authority, Hii Chii Kok v Ooi Peng Jin London Lucien and another [2017] SGCA 38.

A distinguished panel comprising Professor Christian Witting, Associate Professor Anantham Devanand and Ms Rebecca Chew, moderated by Associate Professor Tracey Evans Chan, then joined Professor Kumar for a lively discussion on the book’s key themes — individual rights, human obligations, patient agency and shared decision‑making.

One key point stood out: trust.

The panellists explored the importance of trust in the doctor-patient relationship, highlighting the distinction between patient autonomy and patient agency, and why patient agency was crucial for shared decision-making.

Congratulations to Professor Kumar on this important contribution to the evolving conversation on medical law, healthcare and the doctor-patient relationship.

Congratulations to NUS Law JD students Jerome Jimmy Wong '28, Reina Wong '28, Yiyan Zhao '28 and Chantelle Ing '28, who were awarded the Most Human Centered Award at the Hackathon for a Better World: Future-Proofing the Rule of Law.

Jointly organised by DBS Bank, the Singapore Courts and the Singapore Academy of Law, the hackathon brought together multidisciplinary teams comprising partners, lawyers, in-house counsel and students to develop practical solutions addressing the future of legal practice, with a focus on AI, sustainability and internationalisation.

The team's award-winning proposal introduced a two-pronged framework: BDP (Before, During and Post Action Review), a task-level framework that creates dedicated supervision touchpoints to capture legal judgement, technical learning and support needs, and Sustained Action Review (SAR), which translates these insights into a bi-annual developmental review to track confidence, learning and professional growth over time.

The team shared, "The gap is not always willingness; it is structure. The future of law cannot be measured only by speed, output or technological adoption; it also depends on whether firms and institutions can preserve the apprenticeship function of legal work, so that the next generation can build confidence, judgment and commitment in a profession they can see themselves staying in."
