NUS Law has become the first law school in Singapore to partner Harvey, providing students and faculty with access to the leading legal AI platform used by law firms and legal departments worldwide.

Through this collaboration, the NUS Law community will be able to integrate cutting-edge legal technology into teaching, learning and research, as part of the faculty's efforts to prepare future lawyers for technology-enabled practice.

Professor Andrew Simester, Dean of NUS Law said, “Our collaboration with Harvey represents an important step in preparing our students for the future of the profession. By providing access to Harvey, we can enhance the efficiency of their research. At the same time, access to AI does not displace the need to inculcate fundamental legal skills in our students. NUS Law’s aim is to ensure that our students learn to engage with these tools, and that they do so thoughtfully, critically and responsibly.”

The partnership further strengthens NUS Law's position at the forefront of legal education and research, and forms part of the Faculty’s broader strategy to incorporate AI into teaching, learning and research.

With heartfelt performances and shared memories, the Graduate Students’ Farewell Dinner marked a meaningful close to the NUS Law journey for our JD and LLM Class of 2026.

Held at Temasek Club, the evening brought together 124 graduating students, faculty and staff to celebrate the friendships and experiences that shaped their time at NUS Law. Across conversations, performances and reflections, one theme stood out clearly: the strength of a community built across cultures, campuses and classrooms.

As Professor Umakanth Varottil PhD ’10, Vice-Dean (Graduate Studies), congratulated the graduating cohort, he reminded them that while the world may be “defined by volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity”, he hopes that the education they received at NUS Law has prepared them to face its challenges head on.

Congratulations to Associate Professor Mervyn Cheong '08, on being recognised by Doyle's Guide as a "Recommended Criminal Defence Lawyer".

Doyle’s Guide is widely regarded as one of the most credible and trusted benchmarks of legal excellence among both consumers and legal professionals. The rankings for Criminal Law are compiled entirely through peer review, drawing on feedback from partner-level solicitors and senior lawyers whose practice is predominantly focused in this area.

On his achievement, Prof Cheong shared, "It was a pleasant surprise to be recognised in this year’s rankings. Criminal law is a demanding field, particularly in capital cases where the stakes are very high, and recognition by one’s peers is never easy to come by.

Practice keeps me closely connected to developments in criminal litigation and sharpens my understanding of advocacy and effective representation, which in turn informs my work as a teacher and researcher. This recognition encourages me to continue contributing both in court, and through my teaching and research, to the ongoing work of ensuring fairness and effectiveness in the criminal justice system."

Congratulations to Prof Cheong on this well-deserved recognition.

Congratulations to Guan Weixuan Isabelle ’26, Chan Shao Wei ’27 and Dorian Han ’28, who have emerged as First Runners-Up at the 49th edition of the Jean-Pictet Competition (JPC) held in Dilijan, Armenia.

The JPC is an international simulation-based tournament that differs from traditional mooting by “taking the law out of the books”. The team was required to operationalise International Humanitarian Law (IHL) by adopting the personas of diverse stakeholders, ranging from the Minister of Defence and military commanders to legal delegates for international actors, such as the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

“Being immersed among 147 participants from diverse legal, cultural, and conflict-affected contexts enabled a rich peer-to-peer exchange, grounding doctrinal discussions in lived experience. This exposure to practitioners and peers from countries where IHL is actively invoked pushed us past the simple academic understanding of international humanitarian law to its underscored immediacy, relevance, and human impact,” shared the team.

The trio expressed their gratitude to their coaches: Peide Huang ’16; LLM ’22, Jiaxi D**g ’25 and Rachel Quek ’24, as well as their tutor, Mr Emil Sahakyan, and the Committee for the JPC for their support and facilitation of their IHL journey.

Across borders, beyond classrooms—Thai-ed with Love continues to make a meaningful impact.

In its latest edition, the NUS Pro Bono Group (PBG) partnered with peers from the University of Malaya and the International Islamic University Malaysia, alongside Thailand’s Thammasat University, marking a growing partnership between law students in the neighbouring countries.

What sets this year’s theme apart is its focus on scams (particularly online love scams, e-commerce scams and online gambling scams) which are among the most prevalent digital threats facing young people in Thailand.

The highlight of the trip was a visit to Wat Sa Kaeo Orphanage, where students designed interactive educational booths and game-based activities to equip participants with the skills to identify red flags and respond to potential scams online.

Reflecting on her own experience, Andrea Wee ’28 shared, “Coordinating with the Thai students for live translation during the games was a challenge, but once we managed to run the activities smoothly, interacting with the children became an incredibly heartwarming and rewarding experience.”

Through hands-on activities and meaningful interactions with local students, participants gained practical insights into pro bono work across different jurisdictions and built lasting connections that transcend borders.

NUS Law celebrates an outstanding showing at the 33rd Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot (Vis Moot) held in Vienna, and the 23rd Willem C. Vis (East) International Commercial Arbitration Moot (Vis (East) Moot) held in Hong Kong SAR.
The Vis team—comprising Faye Guo Feiran ’26, Samuel Khor ’27, Evan Sim ’27 and Tejyashri Jhanvi Rideshkumar ’27—advanced to the Round of 64 in Vienna and received Honourable Mention awards for Best Team Orals and Best Claimant Memorandum. Evan delivered an exceptional performance, placing third out of over 2,500 competitors to receive the Martin Domke Award for Best Individual Oralist.

The Vis (East) team—comprising Nicholas Chin Zong Hong ’26, Darryl Lee ’26, Tham Mei Shuen ’26 and Qu Chenxin ’27—received two Honourable Mention awards for Best Individual Oral Advocate in Hong Kong, with Mei Shuen and Chenxin placing in the top 10% of competitors. The team also emerged as Quarterfinalists at the Moot Shanghai 2026 Pre-Moot.

The Vis Moots are among the largest and most prestigious competitions on international commercial arbitration. This year's moot problem was based on the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) rules, and on the exemption of liability provisions under the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG).

The team extends their heartfelt thanks to their coaches Mitchell Yeo ’14, Loh Tian Kai ’16, Kenneth Lim ’19, Nicole Seah ’22 and Samuel Wee ’24, as well as the alumni and faculty members who supported them throughout their preparation.
