Energy Research Institute at NTU recently hosted a team from Tenaga Nasional Berhad who were in Singapore on a learning journey. We shared an engaging exchange on ERI@N's research capabilities, innovation and the translational impact towards a more sustainable energy future, while learning more about TNB’s perspectives and priorities as a leading energy utility in the region.

The team had a fruitful session to deep-dive into areas of mutual interest and explore potential opportunities for collaboration, and we look forward to continuing the conversation and identifying meaningful avenues to work together in advancing the energy transition.

ERI@N's Programme Director Alex Chong, a member of the SS 722 Working Group, was invited to present an overview of SS 722-3:2026 DC Electric Vehicle Charging System and participate in the panel discussion at the launch of Singapore Standard SS 722:2026, joining industry leaders to discuss the role of standards in supporting Singapore's land transport electrification journey and the broader energy transition.

The newly launched SS 722:2026, developed through the leadership and collaboration of the Land Transport Authority – We Keep Your World Moving, Enterprise Singapore and the The Institution of Engineers, Singapore - IES, establishes comprehensive requirements for the design, installation, operation and maintenance of electric vehicle charging systems, while introducing provisions for emerging technologies such as wireless charging, mobile EV charging, battery swapping and dual-gun charging capabilities. These standards will help to strengthen safety, interoperability and cybersecurity while supporting the continued expansion of Singapore's EV charging ecosystem.

ERI@N hosted the Parliamentarians from the South Asia Regional Parliamentary Forum (SARPF) for Climate, Energy and Environment who were in Singapore to deepen their understanding of regional energy transition pathways, clean energy technologies and grid resilience.

ERI@N's Chief Operating Officer Niels de Boer and Programme Director Ramprakash Kathiresan shared the institute's latest research and innovation efforts across key areas and programmes. Our researchers showcased projects in battery research, advanced power electronics, renewables' & integration, electrification, future mobility and sustainable built environment.

We thank the SARPF delegation for the engaging discussions and look forward to strengthening partnerships that support a more sustainable, resilient, and interconnected energy future across the region.

ERI@N participated at the recent Future of Vehicles: Innovation, Engineering & Economic Conference held at Zalaegerszeg Innovation Park, Széchenyi István University, Hungary. The conference served as an international platform that brought together researchers, industry experts, and policymakers to discuss the latest advancements shaping the future of mobility.

ERI@N's Chief Operating Officer Niels de Boer and Programme Manager Sai Datta Venkat were invited respectively as a session chair and a plenary speaker to share about our efforts in future mobility solutions as well as the work of the Centre of Excellence for Testing & Research of Autonomous Vehicles – NTU (CETRAN) team in autonomous vehicle assessment, testing, and validation to support the safe deployment of autonomous mobility technologies.

It was a great opportunity for us to exchange ideas and explore innovative solutions towards shaping the future of mobility.

ERI@N welcomed NTU's Vice President (Industry) Prof Shirley Meng for an introductory visit to learn about ERI@N's translational research and development efforts across the energy value chain, including renewable energy, energy storage, hydrogen, electrification, energy storage, power grids, future mobility and sustainable built environment.

Hosted by ERI@N's Executive Director Prof Madhavi Srinivasan and supported by our Co-Director Prof Chan Siew Hwa and programme directors, Prof Shirley toured our labs to better understand some of our key projects, and also our collaborations with industry partners to translate research into real-world solutions that support Singapore’s decarbonisation and energy transition.

We look forward to working closely with Prof Shirley to build and strengthen NTU's industry partnerships as we continue to advance innovative energy solutions.

Energy Research Institute at NTU is partnering with Hydrexia to develop and demonstrate the integration of a commercial solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system with Hydrexia’s metal hydride hydrogen storage technology. The Research Collaboration Agreement was signed today at the World Hydrogen Energy Conference.

The project, Integrated MHX–SOFC Demonstrator: Retrofit and Heat-Driven Hydrogen Supply Using Solid-State Storage, will focus on the subsystem engineering required to connect the two technologies, including hydrogen delivery, thermal management, controls, and balance-of-plant integration.

The demonstrator will use hydrogen released from Hydrexia’s metal hydride storage module to operate a commercial SOFC system. As both technologies involve high-temperature operation, the project will evaluate how recoverable heat from the SOFC system can support hydrogen desorption from the metal hydride. This thermal integration has the potential to reduce auxiliary heating requirements and improve overall system efficiency.

Through the collaboration, ERI@N and Hydrexia aim to demonstrate a stable, integrated hydrogen-to-power system and validate the operational and efficiency benefits of coupling solid-state hydrogen storage with commercial SOFC technology.

The World Hydrogen Energy Conference (WHEC) 2026 has kicked off in Singapore at the Sands Expo & Convention Centre with Guest-of-Honour, Mr John Chen, Executive Director of the Advanced Energy & Decarbonisation Office. Bringing together researchers, industry leaders, policymakers, and innovators from around the world, WHEC 2026 will explore the opportunities and challenges in advance the innovations that will power a global hydrogen economy.

Organised by the Energy Research Institute @ NTU, the week-long conference will feature important discussions, technical sessions, and knowledge exchanges on the latest developments across the hydrogen value chain — from production and storage to utilisation and integration into future energy systems.

Niels shared about ERI@N’s work and our Sustainable Water-based Cooling in Megacities (SWiM) project, which aims to develop innovative cooling solutions to support more liveable and sustainable cities.

ERI@N welcomed the team from the Advanced Energy & Decarbonisation Office (AEDO) led by AEDO's Executive Director John Chen to learn more about our ongoing efforts to support Singapore's energy transition.

Our Executive Director Prof Madhavi Srinivasan and Co-Director Prof Chan Siew Hwa shared about the RD&D efforts that ERI@N has built across the energy value chain, including renewables', multi-energy systems and grids, advanced power electronics, smart & sustainable environment, energy storage systems, hydrogen, electrification.

It was a fruitful exchange that provided both teams an opportunity to discuss Singapore's evolving energy landscape and exchange perspectives on advancing innovative energy solutions to support the nation's decarbonisation goals. The visit was supported by ERI@N's programme directors and cluster directors, as well as professors from the School of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (CCEB).

We look forward to working closely with AEDO and to continue playing an important role in advancing Singapore's energy transition through impactful research, innovation, and industry collaborations.
