What should remain human in an AI-driven future?

Organised by SUTD’s Architecture and Sustainable Design (ASD) pillar, the 𝐀𝐈 𝐛𝐲 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐇𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 symposium brought together global thought leaders, practitioners and academics to explore questions around human meaning and consciousness, the influence of power and capital, and the role of intentional design in shaping a responsible AI future.

At the heart of the conversations was a bigger question: how can technology remain grounded in enduring values of truth, goodness, beauty and human flourishing?

Beyond the symposium, speakers also toured ASD’s refreshed studio gallery and viewed the 𝐓𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲, an installation from the Singapore Pavilion’s Homecoming Exhibition that has made its final stop at SUTD. Featuring student work from across the curriculum, the installation sparked further conversations on design, architecture and our shared future.

How can Generative AI become part of the design process, not just another tool?

SUTD Academy’s 𝘎𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘈𝘐 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘋𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 & 𝘐𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 is a two-day course that brings Generative AI into a structured Design Thinking framework, helping participants explore how AI can support the journey from ideation to ex*****on.

Designed for professionals such as Design Managers, Design Engineers and UX Designers, the course goes beyond using existing AI tools. Participants will learn how to code and develop their own Generative AI-powered design workflows, with a focus on practical application and innovation.

What does Design and Artificial Intelligence look like in practice?

Our Design and Artificial Intelligence (DAI) students recently visited Red Hat to get a closer look at how enterprise AI, cloud computing and open-source technologies come together in real-world environments.

Beyond the technology, the visit also offered a glimpse into how engineering, product and design teams collaborate to solve complex problems. Students saw familiar approaches such as the Double Diamond framework and user-centred design being applied in industry to discover, define, prototype, test and refine solutions.

They also had the opportunity to connect with Red Hat engineers and learn more about internship and career pathways.

National swimmer. SUTD DAI pioneer. Now, Deloitte analyst.

Aster Angelic Leong’s path wasn’t mapped out from the start — and that’s kind of the point.

From trying new things to stepping outside her comfort zone, she shares how curiosity helped shape where she is today. Looking back, some of her most meaningful lessons came not just from the classroom, but from the projects, people and experiences that pushed her beyond her comfort zone.

Her advice to anyone still figuring things out?

AI tools are everywhere. Knowing how to apply them to the right problems is what makes the difference.

During a recent industry sharing session at SUTD, the Google team shared an important perspective: the gap today is not simply a lack of AI tools or technical talent, but people who can connect technology with real business and human needs.

It is an approach that closely reflects how we think about Design and Artificial Intelligence at SUTD. Through our Design and Artificial Intelligence (DAI) curriculum, students learn to identify the right problems, redesign workflows, evaluate trade-offs and integrate AI into services responsibly.

The session also gave our students insights into cloud technologies, generative AI and early-career pathways, bringing industry perspectives directly into the learning experience.

What if future 6G networks could sense their surroundings as they communicate?

Join us for the next FCP Seminar by Professor Jinho Choi from the University of Adelaide as he explores Reciprocity-Based Bistatic ISAC in 6G.

The seminar will look at how integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) can enable more environment-aware wireless systems. Professor Choi will share a reciprocity-based approach to cooperative sensing that improves target detection and localisation, while reducing the need for tight synchronisation across distributed network nodes.

A win for Singapore’s architectural heritage. 🏆

The House of Tan Yeok Nee has received a Merit Award in the Conservation category at the Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA) Design Awards 2026.

Led by DP Architects in collaboration with SUTD Associate Professor Yeo Kang Shua, the restoration was recognised for its rigorous research, skilled craftsmanship and careful attention to preserving the historic character of this significant heritage landmark.

Congratulations to Associate Professor Yeo and the project team on this recognition!

Campus has grown.

The real test of a robot is not how well it can impress us. It is how useful it can become.

In his latest commentary, SUTD Chair Professor Mohan Rajesh Elara, Academic Director (Innovation Postgraduate) and co-founder of LionsBot, looks beyond the spectacle of humanoid robots to what it really takes for robotics to make an impact in everyday life.

With research focused on robotics and physical AI, Prof Mohan brings both academic and industry perspectives to the question of what makes a robot genuinely useful.

From designing robots that can reliably take on physically demanding work to creating buildings and precincts that are ready to work with autonomous machines, the opportunity goes beyond the technology itself.

For Singapore, the question is not simply how quickly robots will arrive, but how we can design our environments, industries and workforce to make the most of them.

When it comes to climate action, what makes mitigation feel more desirable, but adaptation more feasible?

In this session of the Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities (LKYCIC) Seminar Series, Dr Shu Tian Ng, Research Fellow at the LKYCIC under the Chan Heng Chee Research Fellowship, explores the psychological factors that shape how we think about climate mitigation and adaptation.

Her research examines why mitigation is often seen as more desirable, with broader global benefits, while adaptation can feel more feasible because its benefits are more immediate and localised. She will also explore how perspective shapes these priorities, and why thinking as a policymaker rather than a citizen can shift the focus towards adaptation.

The findings offer useful insights into how climate advocacy and communication can better speak to both what people want to achieve and what they believe is possible.

Sometimes, a change in plans can lead somewhere unexpected.

When the pandemic disrupted Julia Becker’s plans to study overseas, she chose Engineering Product Development at SUTD instead.

At SUTD, she explored 3D printing through her coursework and picked up the bass after joining a freshman band camp. When the second-hand bass she bought needed a refresh, she hand-painted a new pickguard. That experiment eventually grew into ThreeStools, her custom guitar pickguard business.

She started by painting the pickguard of an old bass guitar she bought on Carousell. Today, Julia Becker’s business ThreeStools has gone viral, attracted customers around the world and built up a two-month waitlist for custom orders.

What does it mean to truly learn when AI can help us build before we fully understand?

It is a question SUTD student Anieyrudh explores in this thoughtful reflection on learning with AI.

As AI becomes increasingly embedded in how we create, experiment and solve problems, learning may no longer follow a neat path from theory to practice. Sometimes, we build, test, question and learn along the way.

His reflection raises important questions for students and educators alike. How do we know when learning has happened? What does it mean to understand something when AI is part of the thinking process? And what skills matter when the problems we face are increasingly complex and interdisciplinary?

These are questions that will only become more relevant as AI continues to shape how we learn, create and solve problems.

When people ask me what it means to learn with AI, the easy answer is to tell them about intentionality, discernment and ownership. It’s deceptively simple.

What if future wireless networks could go beyond transmitting data to understanding and fulfilling communication goals?

Join us for an FCP Seminar by Professor Yansha Deng from King’s College London as she explores Goal-oriented Multi-Agent Semantic Networking in the 6G Era.

The seminar will look at how 6G communications can move beyond traditional bit-oriented transmission towards semantic and goal-oriented communication, with applications spanning mobile robotics, digital twins, image and video, and the metaverse. Professor Deng will also introduce GoAgentNet, a multi-agent semantic networking architecture designed to enable applications and networks to work together towards shared goals.

How does climate change shape mental health, resilience and community well-being in the Global South?

Join us for the next Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities Seminar Series, where Dr John Aruta, Associate Professor of Psychology at De La Salle University, Philippines, will explore the intersections of climate justice, mental health and resilience through research and community-engaged work in the Philippines.

The session will look at how environmental inequalities shape psychological experiences, and how culturally grounded, interdisciplinary and participatory approaches can strengthen community capacity, support adaptation and foster collective action towards more equitable and climate-resilient societies.
