🇬🇧 Members of our Centre for Astrophysics and Cosmology took part in the 5th LSST Regional Meeting, with many of them presenting their work. Among them were our SMASH fellows and PhD students working on LSST and machine learning.

The timing could hardly be better: LSST has just started its ten-year survey of the southern sky. In his talk, Željko Ivezić, Director of Rubin Observatory, shared that the site was hit by a storm of a scale not seen in 70 years. The good news is that operations are expected to be back online within a month.

Congratulations to everyone who presented!

Zgodaj zjutraj so opazovali eksoplanet z daljinsko vodenim teleskopom GoChile.

A to še ni vse! Zvečer so se pomerili v astronomskem kvizu. Zmagovalna ekipa je nagrado uporabila kar na trgu pred palačo Paternolli v Gorici, kjer so študenti in študentke nastanjeni ta teden.

Yesterday was another intensive day of the one-month study-abroad program titled "Astronomy Europe: Hands-on with Telescopes, Observing, and Artificial Intelligence in Astronomy," attended by students from the University of Washington and the School of Science of the University of Nova Gorica.

Early in the morning, they observed an exoplanet using the remotely operated GoChile telescope, assisted by teaching assistants from the UNG School of Science. In the morning, they analyzed the data they had obtained, and in the afternoon they prepared for the next observations, which took place during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday using the GoChile telescope in Chile and the TTT telescope in Tenerife.

But that's not all! In the evening they competed in an astronomy quiz. The winning team used their prize right on the square in front of the Paternolli Palace in Gorizia, where the students are staying this week.

Prof. dr. Mario Jurić (Univerza v Washingtonu) je v včerajšnjem predavanju z naslovom »Desetletje sprememb paradigme v astronomiji: raziskava "Legacy Survey of Space and Time " in umetna inteligenca«, govoril o nepogrešljivosti umetne inteligence (UI) v sodobni astronomiji.

In yesterday's lecture titled "A Decade of Paradigm Shifts in Astronomy: The Legacy Survey of Space and Time and AI," Prof. Dr. Mario Jurić (University of Washington) spoke about the indispensability of artificial intelligence (AI) in modern astronomy. AI enables both the increasingly rapid analysis of vast astronomical datasets, such as those collected by the Vera C. Rubin Observatory as part of the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) project, and the automation of tasks that once required human judgment, thereby fundamentally transforming the role of the human scientist. In addition to the numerous positive changes, Prof. Dr. Jurić also touched on the darker sides of AI and the need for its regulation. The lecture was organized by the UNG School of Science at Kavarna EPIC in Nova Gorica.
