The Asian Institute of Technology, through its Faculty of Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources - FFANR, AIT, continues to lead impactful research addressing real-world agricultural challenges in the region.

In the highlands of northern Thailand, where monocropping of maize and rubber has long dominated, farmers face declining soil health, environmental degradation, and increasing climate risks. A recent study by FFANR PhD graduate Nitchakan Inkong (Mean), conducted under the supervision of Dr. Takuji W. Tsusaka offers practical pathways toward more sustainable and resilient farming systems.

Her research explores how farmers perceive climate change, what challenges they face, and what drives their willingness to adopt climate-smart agriculture (CSA) solutions such as biochar application, solar-powered irrigation, and diversified cropping systems. Importantly, the study also evaluates whether these alternatives are economically viable for smallholder farmers.

Conducted in Nan Province, the research is part of a broader AIT-led initiative supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), contributing to sustainable livelihoods and climate resilience in upland communities.

This work reflects FFANR’s strong commitment to applied, field-based researchbridging science, policy, and practice to support farmers and advance sustainable agriculture across Asia.
