“My great grandparents looked for a way to obtain new skills and new information to better their lives and the ranch they built. I think it would do a disservice to the people who have come before me to deny the opportunity of an education from home and work.”

Elspeth Rittberger, a junior studying special education at Northern, is working toward her goal of becoming an elementary special education teacher while continuing to work on the ranch and serve her community as a firefighter.

“It takes a lot of work balancing everything, but getting a higher education is important.”

⚖️ From the Wolf Pack to the courtroom! 🐺🎓

Congratulations to Northern State University alumni Mayson Coyle and Kylee Van Egdom on earning their law degrees from the University of South Dakota Knudson School of Law!

Both graduates were part of the Honors Law Opportunity Program, a partnership between Northern and USD that creates a direct pathway from NSU’s Honors Program to law school and helps address the region’s need for attorneys.

Dr. Kristen Brown, assistant professor of English at Northern, has co-edited a new book exploring how literature, culture and Indigenous knowledge can shape our understanding of environmental stewardship and our relationship with the land.

Published by Routledge, “Redefining Land Management in North American Literature and Culture: From Resource to Reciprocity” brings together 25 contributors and features a chapter co-authored by Brown that explores the role of sound, listening and belonging in environmental stewardship.

Congratulations, Dr. Brown, on this exciting accomplishment!

Through Northern’s HyFlex learning format, she can earn her degree while staying rooted in rural South Dakota. 💛❤️
