Joe Schaeffer (b. 1990) is a graphic designer, artist, and educator based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He teaches as Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at the University of Sioux Falls and co-owns Norse Art Space, a contemporary art gallery focused on fostering dialogue and connection through the arts.
•
Automatic Memory examines the space between deliberate action and automated output. Building from a visual language developed through painting, drawing, design, and remembered encounters with graffiti and street art, Joe Schaeffer combines intuitive mark-making with processes governed by repetition, reproduction, and mechanical systems.
•
Artist Talk is November 13 @ 12p in the Red Room, Reception will follow that evening from 6-8p.

We are pleased to announce that registration is now open for the 33rd Annual Northern State University High School Art Day, taking place Tuesday, November 3, 2026! Our Awards are open to all high school students nationally.

This year’s event features:
• Virtual Art Exhibition Awards open nationally with awards of $300, $200, and $100, plus four honorable mentions of $50
• Top 50 shared on the NSU Art Department page (https://www.facebook.com/nsuartdept)
• Awards are free to enter for any high school student nationally
• Mural Competition with Blick gift card awards for the school in amounts of $300, $200, and $100, plus two honorable mentions of $50
• Opportunities for high school students to showcase their creativity and connect with the NSU Art Department

This week, our painting students participated in a color workshop inspired by Josef Albers’s Interactions of Color in preparation of their first still life paintings! 🌈 .art

In Sculpture, students finished their Hundreds + Thousands project and started their Deconstructed, Reconstructed Chairs 🪑

Advanced Graphic Design students finished their Hundreds Brisbane Olympics pitches ⭕️
•
Research + Capstone Seniors shared their current projects ✨
•

The Northern State University Art Department is seeking applications for an Instructor/Lecturer in undergraduate Art and Design.

* Qualifications:
• MFA in Studio Art with a concentration in Painting, Printmaking, or Drawing, or closely related field.
• Preferred evidence of creative achievement in contemporary practices.
• Preferred two years teaching experience as higher education instructor of record in Art.

* Responsibilities:
• Teach undergraduate level art classes in Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Digital Illustration, and Art Appreciation as needed.
• Engage with contemporary art practices and pedagogy.
• Serve on University Committees as assigned.
• Participate in department activities including recruitment, student advising and mentoring, department planning, field trips and student advocacy.
