April Anthony (‘89) and Luke James (‘04), both serve on the Abilene Christian University Board of Trustees, with Anthony in the Chair position. In pursuit of a moral high ground they believe is supported by Scripture, Anthony, James, and the rest of the Board continue to affirm ACU’s “sexual stewardship policy” that targets and penalizes q***r students. But the Board members seem much less concerned about a moral high ground in the area of finances.
On December 4, the Delaware Court of Chancery awarded a judgement against both Anthony and James for “egregious breaches of the duty of loyalty” when they were senior officers of Encompass Health (now Enhabit). The Court also imposed a constructive trust that will take profits from Anthony and James’ current company, VitalCaring Group, along with $1.62 million in damages and attorneys' fees, based on Anthony and James’ bad faith efforts to conceal their misdeeds, which included falsifying records, deleting evidence, and manipulating communications through lawyers. According to the Court, both “took great pains” to hide their “deceit.”
So since Scripture has a few things to say about fair and ethical financial responsibility, maybe the Board can work on a “financial stewardship policy” for themselves. Or maybe President Phil Schubert can invite them to host “Holy Finances Week” in chapel. After all, in a February 2021 ACU Alumni News, Schubert said that, “April embodies our mission.” Is that mission … getting extremely rich by lying and stealing? 🤔 Just checking.
“Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” – Matthew 19:24
