CARING FOR YOUR NATIVE PLANTS GARDEN: Another good reason to retain seedheads of native plants in the fall is to collect seeds for planting next year. These will need to be gathered at the proper degree of ripeness and in paper bags or envelopes rather than plastic bags, which hold moisture and would cause them to rot. They should also be labelled carefully for future identification, and they may require special storage to maintain them at the proper temperature.

Maddie Bright, the Executive Director at Earth Sangha, a local group that propagates native plants for restoration projects, advises that it is not always easy to grow native plants from seed. The viability time of seeds may be short. They may require cold stratification or special treatment to assure germination. Proper preparation of the ground is essential before planting, and it may actually be easier to start seeds in pots.

Refer to “Planting from seeds” on the Plant NoVA Natives website (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1v2FDdHqEMD7RZh2syYT2WVcaE9E1Rw9VA_1tcdXxVGc/edit) and an article on “Native Plant Seed Propagation” by New Jersey Cooperative Extension (https://njaes.rutgers.edu/fs1329/?fbclid=IwAR1IRf-Yz3VfrVRYmihbLnEngWGm2K1oQevp9ujDiy2Z5xfR8JpxUPNN1Fc) for descriptions of the process.

A webinar on “Winter Seed Sowing” by the Audubon Society of Northern Virginia (https://vimeo.com/766510739/7d0001db23) provides illustrations and discusses specific native species.

The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center provides specific details in the Propagation section of information for each native species. (https://www.wildflower.org/plants/)
