Prevention and recovery will be the focus Saturday, September 12th, as the annual “Step Out of the Darkness” prayer march returns to ECU and the Ada community.

The event is sponsored by the Brandon Whitten Institute for Addiction & Recovery and the Pontotoc County Drug Free Coalition and is free and open to the public.

The prayer march begins at the Pontotoc County Courthouse and continues down Main Street toward ECU’s Centennial Plaza. The intention of the event is to shed light on truths about drug addiction and dependency.

More than a century after Chickasaw citizen Dan Hays donated 16 acres of his land to help establish a teacher-training institution in Ada, his legacy now has a permanent place on the campus he helped create.

This morning, along with the Chickasaw Nation, we unveiled a new statue by sculptor James Blackburn, honoring Hays and recognizing the man whose generosity in 1909 helped lay the foundation for what would become East Central University.
