Every now and then I struggle not just physically but also mentally, but I think that’s true of all of us. By staying heart healthy I believe that it is important to lean into healthy habits to keep our hearts strong! Rest and relaxation are not only great ways to de-stress but are key to taking care of your heart. Many forms of mental health issues can affect heart disease. There’s the temporary state of depression or a more severe, clinical case. As college students, a lot of us are always studying and working hard to achieve a better future for ourselves. However, when that sinking feeling comes with poor grades can discourage even the most determined student. I think a lot of us unintentionally place a large amount of pressure on ourselves. We worked unbelievably hard in high school to get where we are today, and so as soon as we enter college we expect ourselves to start off strong. At which this is when we can begin to feel stressed and retreat into our shell, away from our peers and the people who care about us the most. We’re frustrated, confused, lonely, and don’t really know what to do. So take some time for yourself and relax! Living a healthy physical and mental life is your choice, but it can only benefit you in every way. Remember, you cannot thank anyone but yourself. You are so strong because you have already made it this far. Do it for yourself because you should be your biggest fan, and at the end of the day you should be cheering yourself on for tomorrow. The future is bright, just open up your eyes and see it.
Some heart-healthy tips:
1. Recognize your feelings and express them. Talk to loved ones, write in a journal or join a support group. Seek professional help if you need it.
2. Manage stress with daily mindful meditation, yoga or deep breathing exercises.
3. Avoid heavy drinking and don’t smoke.
4. Exercise. Try a 15-minute brisk walk, swimming, cycling, gardening or dancing.
5. Eat a healthy diet with plenty of omega-3 fatty acids, which have anti-inflammatory effects.
