The Institute for Ethics provides resources for the community through identifying the major ethical theories found in the profession, developing models of approaching ethical problems, and providing forums in which those issues can be discussed. Tonight at 7pm Thomas May, PhD, will be discussing ethical issues surrounding vaccines. His presentation will examine the phenomenon of vaccine hesitancy, and its roots in concerns about vaccine safety. Particular attention will be paid to the reasoning underlying vaccine safety concerns, what can and cannot be inferred from existing evidence concerning vaccine safety, and the importance of transparency and trust for pandemic response efforts.

Professor May is the Floyd and Judy Rogers Endowed Professor at the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine at Washington State University, and Research Investigator at the Hudson Alpha Institute for Biotechnology. He has published in the New England Journal of Medicine, Nature, Science, American Journal of Public Health, American Journal of Bioethics, The Hastings Center Report, and elsewhere.

Next week Dana Dowd will be heading to Dallas, Texas to attend IMPACT 2019 The Ultimate Ethics & Compliance Benchmarking Event. The Keybnote speaker will be Brian Benczkowski, Asst. Attorney Gemeral for the Criminal Division of the Dept of Justice.

The conference will also feature speakers from Harvard Business School, Southwest Airlines, Dell, Lockheed Martin, BP, Boeing, and Eli Lilly. The focus will be on identifying and mitigating ethics and compliance risks, establishing and maintaining an ethical culture within organizations, and incentivizing leaders to act with integrity.

Dana was awarded the 2019 ECI Ethics Academy Student Scholarship, and as a result her travel and conference expenses will be fully covered by the sponsoring organization.

Adrian College and Siena Heights University have again partnered to organize and host the Great Lakes Philosophy Conference at Siena Heights University. Undergraduates, graduate students, and professional philosophers will be discussing research on the topic Ethics: Today and Tomorrow, and presentations are free and open to the public.

The keynote speaker this year is Robert Audi, of University of Notre Dame. Some of Professor Audi's publications include Means, Ends, and Persons: The Meaning and Psychological Dimensions of Kant’s Humanity Formula (Oxford University Press, 2016)
Moral Perception (Princeton University Press, 2013)
Practical Reasoning and Ethical Decision (Routledge 2006)

ENGLISH ENLIGHTENMENT AND THE STATE OF NATURE

We are pleased to announce that the Ethics Institute will be hosting a special students only discussion forum on Saturday April 13. Students from around the region will discuss questions concerning human nature, morality, and political authority in the philosophies of Hobbes, Locke, and Bishop Butler. Interested students should contact Professor Spence.

The forum will be sponsored by the Institute for Humane Studies.
