George Newkome honored today in France

George R. Newkome, professor of polymer science and chemistry, received an honorary doctorate from the University of Bordeaux in France today, July 8.
This award is bestowed upon foreign personalities in appreciation for their contributions to the arts, literature, science or technology. Newkome has worked with scholars at the University of Bordeaux for more than 20 years.
In 2001, Newkome became the Oelschlager Professor of Science and Technology and a professor of polymer science and chemistry at UA. He also served as the vice president for research and dean of the graduate school until October 2014.
Newkome’s accomplishments include publication of more than 480 papers and 50 issued patents. He also has edited or written more than 20 books and monographs during his career.

Are you working on research that has commercial potential? Would you like to learn how to get your technology into the hands of customers? Would you like to meet like-minded people and engage with industry and entrepreneurs?
I-Corps@Ohio is a new statewide National Science Foundation-affiliated program designed for innovative faculty and students to explore the potential for real-world application of their research or technology. Working closely with industry mentors and led by NSF-certified trainers with entrepreneurial experience, faculty/student teams:
• Assess where their research fits in the world and what problems it could solve
• Learn foundational language to describe a commercial opportunity
• Connect with potential licensees, partners and research sponsors
• Find ways to pivot your current technology to better suit industry needs
• Increase their chances of commercial success
• Receive $15,000 grants to support program participation
